Today, Monday 14 July, a man from Newsham Park has been jailed for the rape of a woman in Liverpool.

James Anthony Elliott , 30 years, was sentenced to eight years in prison and issued with an indefinite restraining order at Liverpool Crown Court today.

Elliott, of Newsham Drive, was found guilty following a three-day trial which commenced on Monday 7 July.

The court heard that Elliot raped an 18-year-old woman inside a house in August 2022. The woman has been supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Constable Andy Littler from Merseyside’s Unity Team who specialise in Rape and Serious Sexual Assault Offences, said: “This has been an extremely lengthy and complex investigation. Elliott then put his victim through the trauma of having to relive the experience by way of a trial.

“And while no sentence will repair the damage Elliot inflicted on his victim, I hope this conviction has secured some justice for her.

“I would like to praise the dignity she has shown throughout the investigation. Today’s results shows that violence against women and girls will simply not be tolerated and we will work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.”

Detective Constable Littler added:

“We are committed to protecting victims of sexual offences, and anyone who reports an incident to us will be safeguarded and supported throughout the investigation by Specially Trained Officers and Sexual Violence Advocates who will provide all the relevant support.

“Anyone that has been a victim of a sexual offence, is concerned for the safety of someone they know or suspects someone to be engaging in this criminal activity, should come forward and speak to us.

“We have a team of dedicated staff who will expertly and compassionately deal with your reports and we will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.”

A sick paedophile rapist has admitted a series of offences involving a girl involving two counts of rape.

Saptarshi Mitra from Ashfield Avenue, in Kings Heath abused his victim for several years, raping her and committing more than 10 sex offences.

The 42-year-old was caught when his victim she bravely came forwarded and reported the abuse.

West Midlands Police officers arrested Mitra and seized his mobile phone which contained indecent images of the girl.

He was charged with 13 sex offences, including two rapes and was due to stand trial.

But he changed his plea and admitted all the offfences when appearing at Birmingham Crown Court last Monday (July 7).

He will now face a ‘lengthy prison term’ when he is back in court in September for sentencing.

Detective Sergeant Claire Hankinson, from West Midlands Police's Complex Child Abuse Investigation Team, said:

“Mitra took advantage of his young victim but she had the courage to report the abuse.

“We hope her bravery encourages other young people subjected to sexual abuse to come forward.”

A paedophile has avoided jail after asking a '13-year-old girl' for sex on Snapchat.

Amjad Alshameri was caught out because he was in fact messaging an undercover police officer.

The 39-year-old also asked the fake profile if she 'liked muscles' and if she was a 'naughty girl'.

Alshameri, of Granville Street in Birmingham city centre, admitted one charge of attempting sexual communication with a child.

He was sentenced to an 18-month community order at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, July 11 with 30 days rehabilitation activity and 100 hours of unpaid work.

An undercover officer had created a Snapchat account for a non-existent 13-year-old girl named 'Liv', which included age-appropriate pictures.

Alshameri, calling himself 'Mo.Million07', contacted the profile on April 15 this year.

Will Dudley, prosecuting, said: "The defendant asked Liv how old she was.

"She tells him she is 13 and he asks whether she likes older guys.

"He asked what she looked like and the defendant invited her to send him a photograph to which he responds telling her she looks 'cute and pretty'.

"He asked whether she likes muscles after sending a photograph of himself in the gym.

"The defendant tells Liv he thinks she can be a 'naughty girl'.

"He asks whether she has a boyfriend and whether she is ready for dating.

"He asked about her previous boyfriend and what she did with her previous boyfriend."

Mr Dudley continued: "He asked if she thought it was nice to be naughty sometimes.

"He asked if she was ready for sex, whether she was going to be a naughty girl and whether she wanted to try sex.

"He asked her with whom and whether it might be with him."

Police linked Alshameri's mobile number to the Snapchat account.

Judge Peter Carr confirmed he was going to follow probation's recommendation for a community order, negating the need for the defendant's barrister to make any mitigating comments.

He told him: "The offence is serious and has a starting point of imprisonment. However I have had the benefit of reading a pre-sentence report on you.

"I can tell you I am not going to send you to prison."

Alshameri was also made the subject of a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and sex offender notification requirements.

A teacher from Birmngham has been jailed for sending naked images of himself to girls, after he contacted them online pretending to be a teenage boy.

Jamie Morgan, aged 27, made contact with three girls on the social media platform Snapchat and encouraged them to send him naked images of themselves.

He used various usernames and told one of the girls he was a 17-year-old boy.

Morgan went on to send the girls naked images of himself, and persuaded one of the girls into sending him a similar image of herself.

But concerns were being raised about him and after officers were contacted early this year, they carried out an investigation into his online activity which resulted in him being arrested on 30 January.

At a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court in March, Morgan admitted three counts of sending indecent images and one charge of inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.

On Thursday (10 July) Morgan of Park Close, Erdington, was jailed for three years and six months. He has also been put on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

DC Darren English from West Midlands Police Public Protection Unit, said:

"Morgan lied and manipulated his young victims, believing that doing so online and by using a fake identity would shield him from being found out. But we were able to quickly unmask his criminal activity and bring him before the courts.

"These young girls and those around them have shown great strength in supporting our investigation throughout and it has resulted in Morgan now being locked up."

A Devon man has been jailed for 30 months after admitting the sexual abuse of a child.

Charles Kirkby, 39, of Church Road, St Thomas, Exeter, appeared at Exeter Crown Court for sentencing on Friday 13 June after previously pleading guilty to two sexual assaults of a girl aged under 13.

At the sentencing hearing the court heard how Kirkby abused the girl on a date in 2024.

After the girl bravely told her mother, police were called and Kirkby was arrested the same evening.

In interview he stated he was under the influence of alcohol but denied any sexual offending.

Kirkby was also made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Officer in the case, DC Jon Stephens from the Public Protection Unit, said:

“By bravely disclosing what had happened to her, the victim in this case has allowed us to investigate and bring Kirkby to justice for his offending.

“His actions were motivated by sexual desire and showed no consideration for the child victim.

“We ask anybody who has been the victim of child sexual abuse to report it, whether it be recent or non-recent, and we will investigate each matter thoroughly.”

A drunk Northumberland sex offender was caught after the brave teenage victim secretly recorded the "disgusting" things he was saying to her. John Rutherford began making sexualised comments to the girl before he sexually assaulted her.

But as the 40-year-old was making the lude comments, the brave victim managed to covertly record what he was saying to her. Following the sex assaults - which involved Rutherford "grabbing" her - the teen managed to break away from him before reporting what happened to police.

On Friday, Rutherford, of Amble, Northumberland, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court to be sentenced for two counts of sexual assault. He had pleaded guilty to the offences.

David Povall, prosecuting, said Rutherford had been "drinking heavily" before he began making sexual comments to a teenage girl. He said: "[The victim] recorded some [comments] on her mobile phone. The defendant was very heavily intoxicated."

Soon after, ex-RAF serviceman Rutherford sexually assaulted the girl after he "grabbed her by the waist". The frightened girl eventually managed to break free and contacted police.

Lorraine Mustard, defending, said Rutherford was of previous good character and "remorseful" and that he did not want to use alcohol as an excuse. She added he was supported by his wife and other members of his family.

Sentencing him, Recorder Thomas Moran said: "[The victim] was completely terrified. Despite her fear, she recorded some of the disgusting things you were saying to her. [The recording] reveals you were very drunk." The court was told that Rutherford, who works as an electrical engineer, is "genuinely remorseful".

He was given a 10 month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months and must complete 30 rehabilitation days. A 120 day alcohol monitoring requirement was imposed alongside 100 hours unpaid work.

He will be on the sex offenders register for 10 years and a 10 year restraining order was imposed.

A five-year jail sentence for a child rapist has allowed his victim to move on, she told the Watford Observer.

Steven Freitas, 34, of Broomfield Rise in Abbots Langley, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Tuesday (June 10) after being convicted of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration.

For each count, the victim was under the age of 13.

The 34-year-old was convicted on Tuesday, February 18, following a trial at St Albans Crown Court.

He committed the crimes in the Three Rivers area between 2004 and 2007, according to a spokesperson for Herts Police.

Having read out a victim impact statement in court, a woman who had been a victim of Freitas told the Watford Observer “we were all happy with the outcome and glad to be able to move on”.

Her mother said that she was “pleased” with the result, having thanked Herts Police for their hard work securing the conviction in February.

At the time of the conviction, she added that the family hope it “inspires other historical abuse victims to come forward and seek the support they need for closure”.

Detective Constable Nathalie Zappia, who led the investigation into the case, said:

“Firstly, I would like to commend the victim for her unwavering bravery in reporting Steven Freitas’ heinous actions to the police, and for giving evidence during the trial.

“Freitas has consistently denied his involvement and pleaded innocence, but the victim is now safe in the knowledge that he will be spending time behind bars.

“While the impact of his crimes will stay with her for the rest of her life, I hope this provides her with some closure and a chance to move on and rebuild.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say that becoming a victim of sexual assault is never your fault. If you’ve been a victim, no matter how long ago the offence occurred, please report it to police.”

A man has been jailed for raping a woman in Croydon, as Metropolitan Police investigating officers appeal for more potential victims to come forward.

John Iwuh, 54 (21.06.1971) of Albert Road, South Norwood appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Friday, 11 July where he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He will also be put on the sex offenders register for life, a restraining order was issued to prevent him from contacting the victim and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was enforced.

He was previously found guilty of rape and voyeurism on Wednesday, 14 May at Croydon Crown Court.

The court heard how he used his job as a nurse to gain the trust of the victim on the dating app Hinge, before luring her to his home and raping her.

He was arrested and charged by Met officers, who found that he had also videoed the rape. He was then further charged with voyeurism.

Detective Inspector Sharad Verma, from the South Area Command Unit, said: 

“I would like to commend the strength of the victim-survivor who bravely reported this awful attack and for her strength throughout this investigation.

“Officers were dedicated in bringing this predator to justice and during the investigation, found that Iwuh had videoed the rape which was then used as evidence against him.

“They also discovered almost 11,000 contacts saved on his phone. Around 60 per cent of those were saved as a woman’s name alongside the name of a dating app.

“We believe there may be more victims out there, targeted by Iwuh under the same circumstances, and urge them to contact us or their local police force.

“I hope the victim-survivor can find reassurance in our actions to put this predator behind bars and that it may give more women the strength to come forward and report crimes. You will be listened to and supported.”

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said:

“This has had a devastating impact on every part of my life.

“Not only was I physically injured but it left me feeling emotionally numb and living in fear. The trauma from this affected my ability to work, relationships, and my health.

“Now he’s in prison, I do feel there has been some justice. I’ve been supported by officers throughout the investigation, and I would encourage others who have been harmed to come forward, report what has happened and get help and support.”

The offending

The court heard that Iwuh met the victim, who is in her 40s, through the dating app Hinge on Tuesday, 7 June 2022 and quickly moved their conversation to WhatsApp.

They arranged a date and met in person the following day, Wednesday, 8 June 2022, at Norwood Junction station.

Iwuh was working as a nurse and used his job to lure the victim back to his home in Albert Road, South Norwood, by saying that he was limited on time as had to get ready for work at a hospital.

Once inside the property, Iwuh repeatedly kept trying to kiss the victim to which she refused. As she tried to leave the property, Iwuh forced her into his bedroom and raped her.

The victim reported Iwuh the same evening to The Met using the online form and received support from specialist officers throughout the investigation.

A vile Sunderland rapist has been jailed for eight years after admitting shocking crimes against two women. James Wright, 25, of Hampstead Road was sentenced on Friday at Newcastle Crown Court.

Wright was called "clearly a dangerous man" by the Northumbria Police officer who led the investigation into him. Wright admitted sex offences including two charges of rape and two of assault in court in May.

He assaulted one of his victims by throwing a mobile phone at her, the police said. His eventual arrest came after two complex investigations which were triggered when both victims came forward to police.

In court on Friday, Wright was sentenced to eight years behind bars and four years on extended licence following his release. He will also be on the Sex Offenders' Register for life and has been given restraining orders preventing him from contacting both victims.

Following his sentencing, Police Staff Investigator (PSI) Hayley Anderson, of Northumbria Police’s Rape Investigation Team said:

"James Wright is clearly a dangerous man who has shown with his consistent violent behaviour that he has no regard for the effects this type of abuse can have.

"No-one should ever have to experience what these women have been through, and their bravery in the decision to report these incidents to police means their abuser is now behind bars. I hope this sentence has given them both the closure they deserve, and also hope it urges others who may be suffering in silence to reach out and report abuse to us."

PSI Anderson said the convictions and sentencing should show other survivors of sexual offences that the force would support them and hold abusers to account. She added: "If you’ve been a victim of sexual abuse, please know that we can help you; report to us today."

A former police officer has been spared jail after admitting he downloaded a video featuring children as young as nine being sexually abused.

George Voisey was branded "a disgrace" at Lewes Crown Court on Friday after he admitted downloading the Category A footage, the most serious classification for that type of material.

The 24-year-old, from Horsham, was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He will also be on the sex offenders' register for seven years and will have to attend 20 rehabilitation days and put in 150 hours of unpaid work.

Voisey had admitted downloading one Cat A video and two counts of downloading indecent images between 22 June and 24 October last year.

He was arrested and suspended from duty after Sussex Police were alerted to his activity by the National Crime Agency in October.

Investigators found five Category B indecent images and seven Category C indecent images of children on his mobile phone.

Voisey had downloaded the Category A video from the Telegram app and sent it to himself on Snapchat.

He was not on duty at the time of the offences and resigned from the force on 1 March this year.

Judge Stephen Mooney told Voisey:

"Up until now you were of good character and had a promising career, all of which you have thrown away.

"You have chosen to seek out images and a video of children being abused.

"Each image or video you look at is a permanent record of a child's life that has been ruined.

"Each is a child in torment and you have contributed to that.

"You are a disgrace."

Sussex Police has referred its investigation to the Independent Office of Police Conduct and will now consider misconduct proceedings against Voisey.

A man who raped a woman more than 20 years ago has been jailed for six and a half years today, 10 July, following a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation.

The woman was in her early 20s when she met Amer Khan, 42, of Rotherham in 2002.

After they had known each other for around a year, Khan – also in his early 20s at the time – became verbally and physically abusive, the woman told NCA officers.

She related how Khan would sometimes pinch, slap and punch her.

Khan’s violence escalated after he pressured the woman to have sex with him during a picnic one day. The woman refused and, fearing what Khan would do, she tried to run away, however Khan caught then raped her. 

The victim recounted to officers her distress during and after the incident. She recalled crying at the time and Khan blaming her for what he had done.

Officers from Operation Stovewood - the NCA’s enquiry into historic allegations of sexual abuse in Rotherham – began an investigation in 2022 after they identified the woman was a victim of rape in the course of separate enquiries.

They charged Khan in February 2024. Khan was today found guilty of one count of rape at Sheffield Crown Court, after which the judge immediately sentenced him. Once released from prison, Khan must sign the sex offenders’ register.

Senior investigator Kath Blain, from the NCA’s Operation Stovewood, said: “When the victim first met Khan he showed no signs of being violent, however after gaining the woman’s trust Khan became abusive and that behaviour quickly escalated to sexual violence.

“Specially-trained National Crime Agency investigators listened to the victim’s account and sought corroborating evidence. Our evidence and the victim’s brave testimony has resulted in Khan being convicted more than twenty years after he committed his crime.

The NCA's Operation Stovewood remains the single biggest investigation of its kind, looking at allegations of abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. To date 43 people – including Khan – have been convicted.

A depraved Scots predator has been caged after being convicted of raping two women as they slept.

Craig Dodds subjected a woman to horrific repeated sexual attacks 'several times a week' between April 2020 and April 2022.

During that time, Dodds, 25, from West Lothian, also slapped the woman on the body, issued threats of violence and repeatedly punched walls and himself on the head while blaming his actions on her.

Dodds was also convicted of raping the woman on various occasions at an address in West Lothian between September 2020 and April 2022.

He was also convicted of raping a second woman in Falkirk in 2018, Edinburgh Live reports.

While handing down a sentence of seven years and six months at the High Court in Edinburgh at the end of June, Lord Harrower told how, while living with his victim in West Lothian, he raped her several times a week while she slept.

On one occasion, the woman woke to find him engaging in sexual intercourse with her and locked herself in the bathroom and had a shower before sleeping on the sofa for the rest of the night. Despite this, Dodds continued to sexually assault his victim on several occasions.

Dodds also engaged in a course of abusive behaviour towards her including slamming doors, punching walls, directing abusive and derogatory remarks towards her and shouting at both her and a child.

On one occasions he assaulted the woman by slapping her leg to her injury.

The depraved abuser was also convicted of the rape of a second woman in Grangemouth in August 2018. On that occasion Dodds had driven her home after an evening socialising.

The woman had been drinking and woke to find Dodds having sexual intercourse with her in her own bed. Despite protesting, Dodds did not stop.

At the High Court in Edinburgh Dodds was sentenced to seven years and six months imprisonment and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

The sentence was backdated to May 15, 2025, when he was remanded in custody. A non-harassment order was also imposed, preventing Dodds from contacting, approaching or communicating with either victim for an indefinite period.

Lord Harrower said: "So far as harm is concerned, I have had regard to the complainers’ evidence and to their personal statements which bear witness to the devastating psychological impact which your offending has had upon them. As regards culpability, I bear in mind that these are your first offences.

"Although you are now aged 25 and the guideline for sentencing young persons does not apply, I have taken account of your relative youth and immaturity at the time these offences were committed. Rehabilitation is an important consideration, and I bear in mind also that you have responsibilities as a father. But for all these considerations the sentence I am about to impose would have been significantly longer.

"Had I been sentencing you separately in relation to these offences, I would have sentenced you as follows. In respect of charge 1, the offence is aggravated by reason of the fact that it occurred in the victim’s own home, while she was asleep or unconscious, and therefore in a vulnerable state.

"Your culpability is mitigated by youth and immaturity more for this offence than for the others. The term of imprisonment would have been 4 years and 6 months. In respect of charge 2, I would have sentenced you to a term of imprisonment of 1 year, 3 months of which would have been attributable to the child aggravation.

"In respect of charge 3, not only was the complainer asleep at the time of your offending, but it occurred repeatedly over a lengthy period, during much of which she would have been particularly vulnerable as a result of the course of abusive behaviour you inflicted upon her.

"Your offending was further aggravated because you risked causing an unwanted pregnancy. In respect of this charge, I would have sentenced you to a term of imprisonment of 6 years, 6 months of which would have been attributable to the domestic abuse aggravation."

A RAPIST has been jailed for 17 years.

Ivor Rozentals, a Latvian national, faces automatic deportation after he has served his sentence.

Rozentals, 37, of no fixed abode, Bradford, and currently in custody in HMP Leeds, was said to have “degraded” his victim, who also suffered grievous bodily harm at his hands.

He was found guilty of rape, and grievous bodily harm, by a jury following a trial.

He was said to be intoxicated “by drink or drugs or both” during his offending.

In a statement read to Bradford Crown Court on her behalf, the victim said she had experienced mood swings, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm due to Rozentals’ offending, and suffered “disturbing flashbacks”.

She described the impact as “devastating” and “far-reaching”.

Prosecutor Stephen Wood KC said the victim “indicated to the defendant in clear terms that she was not consenting to sexual activity.”

Mitigating, Abigail Langford said a determinate prison sentence would protect the public against further offences, and that “considerable work” would be carried out with Rozentals, who had had a problem with drugs, during his time in custody.

Sentencing Rozentals, who has a history of violence and abuse towards women, Assistant Judge Advocate General Tom Mitchell described the case as “massively serious” and said there was “an element of cruelty” in Rozental’s offending.

He said: “The harm that you have caused in this case” elevated the overall sentence into a more serious band."

He sentenced Rozentals to 17 years imprisonment for rape and two years for GBH, to be served concurrently, making a total jail term of 17 years.

Rozentals will serve two-thirds before he can be released and will then face automatic deportation proceedings.

He must also register as a sex offender register for life.

A man who intentionally sexually touched a child under 13 sexually on at least 10 occasions has been sent to prison.

The trial heard how Nathan Halford, aged 31, from Louth was charged with multiple counts of sexual assault against a girl under the age of 13, reportedly involving sexual touching and penetration between October 2021 and July 2022.

He was found guilty of touching the victim in a sexual manner beneath her clothing on several occasions, with two incidents involving penetration with a part of his body.

The prosecution provided sufficient evidence to assert that the acts were intentional and were carried out for sexual gratification.

Halford, also known as Nathan Parham, of Newmarket Louth, pleaded not guilty to all charges, but was found guilty at an earlier hearing. He was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court, today (11 July) to twelve* years in prison, and one year on extended licence; he will also appear on the sex offenders register for life.

Speaking at the conclusion of the case, Detective Constable Michelle Adamson, said:

In the midst of this complex and deeply painful investigation, one priority remained paramount: making sure the victim's voice was not just heard - but truly understood. From the beginning, her strength and bravery guided us, and it was our responsibility to ensure that her case was addressed with compassion and care. We didn't just work toward a resolution; we worked to build trust, to offer protection, and to deliver the support this individual so profoundly deserved. Her resilience deserves more than admiration - let this outcome stand not only as a testament to justice served, but as a promise that no victim will be left unheard or alone.

A 'devious' child sex pervert who's been committing vile crimes for over 50 YEARS has been locked up again - this time for making indecent images of children.

Teesside Crown Court hear how 'remorseless' and 'devious' Raymond Coleman, previously jailed for attempted rape, has been committing sexual offences for the past five decades. Now, aged 73, the paedophile pensioner has been hauled before the courts again charged with two counts of making indecent images of children.

Gurjot Kour, prosecuting, said: "Due to the defendant's previous conviction, he is deemed as a high risk sex offender." During a police visit, Coleman handed over a mobile phone with very little activity on it.

A search of his house was then carried out and a blue Samsung was discovered under his pillow in his bedroom. There were a number of internet searches linking to child sex abuse and a thorough scan of his phone revealed two class A indecent videos and one class B indecent video.

He has 12 previous convictions for 22 offences dating between 1968 and 2015 - including indecent assault of a child under 16, attempted rape, two counts of indecently assaulting a child under 14 and in 2015 he was handed a nine-year extended sentence for two counts of facilitating the commission of a child sex offence.

Teesside Live previously reported how Coleman, then a regular punter in Middlesbrough’s red light district, boasted that another vice girl had supplied him with a child before. Another prostitute, who had gone with him to his home by taxi, was so sickened by his request that she reported him immediately to police.

On Thursday, July 10, the court heard how the class A videos were 15 seconds and 11 seconds long while the class B video was 23 seconds long. The children in the videos are estimated to be aged between four and 10.

Coleman, who was dressed in a grey suit jacket and walks with the aid of a stick, claimed he watches pornography a few times on his mobile phone when he is bored and said he scrolls over videos but they can play in the background.

Tom Bennett, mitigating, said Coleman, of Raithwaite Close, Guisborough, is of poor mental and physical health and outlined that these offences are not an escalation in his offending. He said: "It is a de-escalation in that there was no contact."

Coleman is said to have notified his offender manager that he will be purchasing a phone that "doesn't allow him to access internet videos of this nature". Mr Bennett said that, if imprisoned immediately, Coleman's poor health would be difficult to manage by the prison authorities.

Judge advocate Thomas Mitchell said: "You are an old man, you are in poor health. To an extent there will be a burden on the prison service. There is work to be done with you. [You] will have to do that when you are released from this sentence.

"Yet again, for over 50 years you have been committing sex offences. You are compelled to look at material like this."

Coleman was jailed for 10 months and made subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
