A convicted child sex offender died in HMP Liverpool on the day he was due to be sentenced for new offences. John Sadler, previously of the Woodchurch area, died at the Walton prison on Tuesday, November 26.

The 32-year-old, whose address was most recently listed as HMP Altcourse, was convicted of a number of offences on Monday this week following a trial. According to charge sheets, Sadler faced communication and image charges involving both real children and police decoys.

The ECHO understands Sadler was facing the prospects of a sentence up to 10 years' imprisonment. A source told the ECHO that Sadler was due to be sentenced on video link on Tuesday afternoon but the hearing got adjourned due to a medical emergency.

Both the Prison Service and the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has now confirmed to the ECHO that Sadler died. A spokesperson for the Prison Service said: "HMP Liverpool prisoner John Sadler died on 26/11/2024. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate."

Adrian Usher, Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, added: "My office are conducting an independent investigation into the death of Mr John Sadler at HMP Liverpool on 26 November 2024. We will publish our final investigation report into his death after the inquest concludes."

The ECHO has previously covered Sadler's previous appearances in court. In 2014 the then 21-year-old groomed a 13-year-old girl before having sex with her in a Wirral park. He met the victim online and chatted to her through Skype before meeting up with her on multiple occasions.

Sadler denied five counts of sexual activity with a child but was found guilty after trial. He was handed an extended prison sentence, as well as a consecutive term for contempt of court after he threatened the victim's family, telling them: "I’ll ****ing have you when I’m out."

Sadler attempted to challenge his sentence at the Court of Appeal in 2017 claiming he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice. He said his password was "known to others" and that his computer and mobile phone had been hacked. Despite the strength of the prosecution case, Sadler fought a futile battle to prove his innocence - including making representations to the Queen about his case.

The dangerous offender, branded "manipulative and calculating" by his trial judge, was refused permission to appeal, with a high court judge concluding: "These convictions are entirely safe, he has failed to identify a single valid ground." Sadler's offending time frame for his recent offences stretched between March 2019 and September 2021, according to charge sheets.

A number of separate investigations are currently ongoing by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman into deaths at HMP Liverpool. he most recent inspection report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons praised its "caring culture". The chief inspector of prisons wrote: "The prison’s strategy for reducing self-harm evidenced a good approach to care, predicated on good staff-prisoner relationships, which were a real strength at HMP Liverpool."

The Ministry of Justice's most recent performance list ranked HMP Liverpool as good. However, a whistle-blower at the prison told the ECHO staffing levels were "frighteningly low", adding the prison's resources were severely stretched, "putting staff and prisoners at risk". In response to the whistle-blower's claims, the Ministry of Justice said the prison had increased the number of officers and invested in new security measures.

A transgender pervert who raped and abused an 11-year-old schoolgirl has been jailed.

Aria Peers, 51, abused the child after bonding with her over Star Wars, with the sickening campaign of rape and assault leaving an "untold impact" upon her.

The offending came to light after the complainant confided in friends and teachers about the abuse.

Now, Peers has been jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of two counts of rape, attempted rape three charges of sexual assault and two offences of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity by a jury following a trial.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that the 51-year-old, of Camberley Drive in Halewood, began by touching the victim's breasts and private parts before encouraging her to use a sex toy on herself. She was then raped.

The court heard how Peers identified as male when the offences were committed in Wirral, but now identifies as female.

Anthony O'Donohoe, defending, told the court: "There is nothing I can say about the facts of the case. The defendant accepts that a significant, lengthy custodial sentence is inevitable in this case.

"The defendant has settled on the wing that she is on, and that is encouraging. That was a matter of some concern. The custodial experience for her in her particular circumstances is likely to be more difficult to navigate than in other, more usual, cases."

Sentencing, Judge Katherine Pierpoint said: "I accept that, in this case, there is an element of grooming with the close bond that you developed and took advantage of.

"It became more sinister, with you grooming her so that you could start to abuse her. You took the opportunity to fulfil your own sexual desires. You were disbelieved by the jury and convicted. You still deny these matters today. She is a brave young woman who, by coming forward, has stood up to you. I hope that, with the support of her family, she will be able to move on with her life.

"Prior to this, you worked as a support worker for a number of years. You have suffered with periods of anxiety and depression and have struggled with your gender identity throughout your life.

"I appreciate that, as a transgender prisoner, there will be issues which you will have to navigate during the very long period of your sentence."

Pierpoint continued: "You targeted a young female child for your own sexual gratification.

"The impact on her is untold. This was offending behaviour on numerous occasions over a period of time."

Peers was also handed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and a lifelong restraining order and will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for life.

A man was jailed after he raped and stalked a woman. Dean Wall, of Pinehurst Avenue, in Anfield, was found guilty of rape and was sentenced on Tuesday, November 5, at Liverpool Crown Court.

The 37-year-old raped a woman at her home in Wavertree on Friday, March 15 and for this offence he was jailed for eight years and three months. He was also jailed for nine months after he pleaded guilty to stalking the same victim, with the two sentences to run concurrently.

Wall has also been issued with a ten-year restraining order against the woman and will sign the Sex Offender Register for life. Detective Chief Inspector Andy McCourt said: “I would firstly like to acknowledge the courage and dignity shown by the victim throughout this investigation.

"I sincerely hope that this sentencing shows that violence against women and girls will simply not be tolerated and we will work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice. Wall denied rape but thankfully a jury found him guilty and he will now spend a significant time in prison for his appalling actions.

We have today, Thursday 31 October, welcomed the sentencing of a man to 21 years in prison for historical child sexual offences.

Ali Alduhlaimi, 41, of Derwent Road West, Liverpool, was convicted of oral rape, sexual activity with a child, inciting a child to engage in sex acts and causing a child to watch adult penetrative activity following an eight-day trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

The charges relate to offences committed against one victim between 2010 and 2016.

He was today sentenced to a total of 21 years in prison with an additional year on licence. He was also given a restraining order, a sexual harm prevention order and ordered to sign on the sex offenders register for life.

A sex offender left a fellow inmate with a broken cheekbone and in need of surgery after attacking him behind bars. John Reynolds subjected his victim to a series of "sucker punches" without warning while the two men were serving time at Walton prison.

The serial flasher was then freed from jail, but began drinking two bottles of vodka a day "with a side of cocaine". A judge today compared him to a "runaway mine train".

Liverpool Crown Court heard this afternoon, Tuesday, that Reynolds was handed an eight-week sentence for a public order offence in March this year and sent to HMP Liverpool. CCTV footage then captured the moment he approached fellow prisoner James Butterworth from behind at around 5.30pm on April and punched him three to four times to the right hand side of the head in an "unprovoked attack".

Rachel Oakdene, prosecuting, described how the 38-year-old, of no fixed address, was then "dragged away" following the "very short lived" assault. The complainant attended Aintree Hospital in the aftermath and was found to have suffered multiple fractures to his cheekbone which required surgery.

Reynolds was subsequently released from prison shortly after the incident and began residing in a hostel. However, he was then evicted from these premises on August 22.

His criminal record shows previous entries for wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault, harassment and breaching court orders. Reynolds was also locked up for 16 months for sexual assault and exposure in 2011, handed a four-month imprisonment suspended for two years for exposure in 2013 and sentenced to a further six months in December 2022, 17 weeks in November 2023 and 12 weeks in December 2023 - with all three of these convictions being for exposure.

This means that he remains subject to notification requirements obliging him to keep the police informed of his current address. But the "high risk sex offender" failed to disclose the fact that he had been made homeless to the force, placing him in breach of the terms of the register.

Emily Land, defending, told the court: "It appears that he is genuinely remorseful. He knows what the outcome is. Your honour has seen the explanation provided by the defendant.

"It is not a reasonable explanation, regardless of what had happened. It was a short lived attack. There were multiple blows, but in a very short period of time. He is immediately dragged away.

"He has been plagued by alcohol addiction, drinking two bottles of vodka a day with a side of cocaine. That was only made worse by the fact that his mother passed away in 2021.

"It was close to her birthday, which has caused a significant spiral at the point where he had been evicted from his accommodation. He found himself homeless and consuming alcohol, to the point where he failed to remember his requirement to go to the police station to let them know.

"As a consequence, he has now found himself back in prison when he had stable accommodation. He knows he has squandered that opportunity.

"He can use this opportunity now he is back in custody to get himself off the current track that his life appears to be on. He knows that he is the only one who can make that change in his life. If he does not do that, he is going to continue to be in front of these courts."

Reynolds admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and failing to comply with notification requirements. Appearing via video link to HMP Altcourse, he was jailed for two years.

Sentencing, Recorder Mark Shepherd said: "It is quite clear that there were issues between you and the other prisoner. Whatever those issues were, and they might have been things which were causing you distress, what you could not do without consequence was resort to violence to try to deal with the situation.

"You are somebody not unknown to the court by any means. You knew what you were doing that day and you did deliver a sucker punch, more than one.

"Offences in custody are more serious because they undermine the fundamental need for control and order to maintain the safety of prisoners and staff that work in that environment. You put all of that at risk by your actions."

Recorder Shepherd added of Reynolds' notification requirements: "These requirements have been in place for a long time. You will have been aware of your responsibilities.

"While it is extremely unfortunate, you are somebody who, at times of adversity, will self destruct and end up drinking vast quantities of alcohol on a daily basis and consuming drugs. You ended up losing your accommodation as a result of that. That placed the public at risk because when you are drinking to excess, when you are on drugs and when you are homeless, you are like a runaway mine train."

A convicted rapist admitted he had "no excuse" after being caught breaching the requirements of the sex offenders' register for the 12th time. Andrew Prince "fell at the first hurdle" within days of his release from his latest spell in prison and has now been put back behind bars.

Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday, Monday, that the now 45-year-old was convicted of two counts of rape in 2005 and sentenced to 10 years. This also saw him handed an indefinite notification requirement, but he has since breached the terms of this court order on numerous occasions.

Christopher Taylor, prosecuting, described how Prince, of no fixed address, was released from a 16-month term for failing to comply with notification requirements on June 3 this year. He was required to inform the police of his address within three days of his release under the terms of the sex offenders' register, but was circulated as being wanted having failed to do so within 11 days.

This led to his arrest in Liverpool city centre at around 8pm on June 15. Under interview, Prince told detectives: "I chose not to, I have no excuse."

His criminal record shows a total of 28 previous convictions for 42 offences, dating back to 1998. These include 11 previous entries for breaching notification requirements, as well as for dishonesty and public order matters.

Olivia Beesley, defending, told the court: "He understands that, because of his repeated offending, he will have to be punished severely. Drinking is at the root of him not being able to seek or maintain housing. On some occasions, upon his release from custody, he ends up drinking immediately and rough sleeping. He suffers from depression, anxiety and severe paranoia as well.

"He falls at the first hurdle. As soon as he is released he drinks, and he does not attend immediately or attends while drunk. He realises that drinking clearly isn't the way forward for him, and he is frustrated with himself. He needs some kind of support network when he is released.

"Quite simply, he has not been able to achieve that yet. His aim this time, upon release from custody, is not to drink at all. He can see from the previous 12 occasions this pattern is just continuing. He tells me that he does not want to use alcohol as an excuse."

Prince admitted one count of breaching notification requirements. Appearing via video link to HMP Altcourse, he was jailed for a year.

Sentencing, Judge Denis Watson KC said: "The public has a very real and legitimate concern that the police know the whereabouts of those who have committed very serious sexual offences when at liberty in the community. Your obligation is to tell the police about your circumstances, whether you are homeless or not.

"You have repeatedly failed to tell the police about your situation, your whereabouts and circumstances. This is, I am told, the told time you have failed to comply with notification requirements.

"It is, it seems, not just a question of you drinking on your release and becoming a rough sleeper or homeless. Alongside that, you are perfect well aware of your obligations to register and you choose not to which makes your position particularly serious."

Prince nodded and replied "thank you" after receiving his sentence.

A 21-year-old man has been sentenced after he arranged to meet a 15-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity following a British Transport Police investigation.

Thomas Kasper, of Sceptre Road, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to meeting or arranging to meet a child following sexual grooming, sexual communication with a child and non-penetrative sexual activity with a child.

He was sentenced to nine months suspended for 18 months on Wednesday 10 July at Liverpool Crown Court.

He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for seven years and given a seven year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The court heard how on, Sunday 21 May last year, officers patrolling Liverpool Lime Street station spotted Kasper with a child engaged in kissing and hugging.

Concerned by what they had witnessed given the visible age difference, officers stopped the pair and engaged them in conversation with Kasper telling them he was 20 years old and the girl just 15.

Speaking to officers separately Kasper admitted they were dating but claimed no sexual activity had taken place. He was arrested for grooming and causing or inciting a child to engage in a sexual activity.

In interview he admitted knowing the child was underage but again claimed nothing of a sexual nature had taken place between them.

Kasper was bailed while investigations continued with officers examining the mobile phone he had with him at the time.

After examination officers found text messages between the pair which were clearly of a sexual nature.

CCTV images from the station on the day of his arrest also showed evidence of a sexual relationship.

Investigating officer Sergeant Stuart Maw said: “Despite Kasper’s claims that the relationship was not in any way sexual, his actions on CCTV from the station clearly demonstrated otherwise as did the text messages which he had sent to the girl.

“Our immediate concern was safeguarding the child who Kasper had evidently groomed for sexual purposes and collecting evidence that would result in preventing others falling prey to him.

“Now he has been issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order it is hoped Kasper will steer clear of contacting any underage girls in the future, not least for fear of imprisonment.”

A paedophile former vicar who was jailed for sexually abusing children for four decades has been sentenced to a further four years after another victim came forward.

John Roberts, 89, was found guilty of 10 counts of indecent and sexual assault in 2020 and jailed for nine years.

He was vicar at St Peter's Church in Woolton, Liverpool, which is known as the "Beatles church" due to it being where John Lennon and Paul McCartney met.

Roberts has now been found guilty of a further five counts of indecent assault against a boy under the age of 14 and sentenced to four years in prison, three of which are to be served on top of his original sentence.

'Real monster'

Merseyside Police said that following publicity around the first court case another male came forward to report he too had been a victim of Roberts when he was aged 10-13 in the 1970s.

In a statement, he said: "For his entire career, [Roberts] has pedalled his lies with talk of sin, repentance and truth.

"I'm appalled that he has shown no intention of following his own guidance.

"How dare he use his God to disguise the real monster that he truly is. Monstrous acts on vulnerable helpless children over decades.

"I cope with it in a fashion, but I speak for those that didn't."

Three previous people reported attacks by Roberts in 2018 - one who had been assaulted as a boy in the 1980s, one who he attacked when they were a child in the 2000s, and one who was abused as an adult in the 2010s.

Roberts was previously convicted of sexual assault in 1989 but had remained in the Church of England after that conviction and became a canon.

Det Con David Tweedle said the victim had trusted Roberts because of the position he held - a trust he had "abused in the most heinous way".

"Today’s result in court will not undo the impact of Roberts’ actions, but I hope the victim and his family takes some sense of justice from it," he said.

"He has shown immense courage to come forward and speak about the hurt Roberts caused and the problems he has faced since."

Anthony Morrissey, 69, of St Oswald’s Street, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today, Tuesday 4 June, when he was sentenced after being found guilty of rape, causing/inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity and causing a child under 13 to watch sexual activity.
 
He was also given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be on the Sexual Offender Register for life.
 
Morrissey carried out the offences in Liverpool in December 2021 and he was arrested in February 2022.

A convicted paedophile infiltrated a theatre group before developing an "obsession" with a child actor.

Charles Thompson made a collage of pictures of the teenage girl after downloading the images from her Facebook page and suggested that they play roles which would see them portraying a couple on stage, despite their 30-year age difference. He also suggested that he "join her" in bed and admitted that his "new year's resolution to give her up" would be doomed to failure as he could not stop "daydreaming" about her.

Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday, Wednesday, that the 46-year-old was previously handed a lifelong sexual offences prevention order and told to sign the sex offenders' register for seven years in 2014 after being convicted of causing a child to watch sexual activity. This also saw Thompson, of Neville Road in Waterloo, handed a 26-week imprisonment suspended for two years at Sussex Magistrates' Court.

Louise Santamera, prosecuting, described how the dad then became involved in Waterloo and Crosby Theatre Company after his daughter joined as a member. He subsequently gave lifts to other children to and from rehearsals and began exchanging messages with one such girl.

While she was "sick in bed", Thompson texted her stating that he "almost wished he could join her, but that sounded wrong". Just over a week later, he messaged her to say he was "sending hugs" and added: "You've been on my mind since I last saw you."

Around six months later, he referred to having a dream in which "she would be the prince and he would be the pretty princess". Thompson added: "Don't worry, I intend to give you up as my new year's resolution.

"I'll see if I can go a whole year without daydreaming of you then making some creepy, inappropriate remark about it. I don't reckon I would last a day."

Thompson was also said to have "prepared a collage" of pictures he had taken from the girl's Facebook page without her knowledge. The police were contacted the following month after concerns were raised to the group's chairman.

She then challenged the defendant, who "apologised and said it was wrong". Thompson added that it "started off as a joke but it had gone too far" and said he was "glad the staff knew about it as it stopped it from going any further".

Ms Santamera said that he had been "involved in a number of productions" and "would have come into contact with various children under the age of 16". The chair also recalled one occasion on which he had recommended the girl for a part which she was deemed "too young for", and said that he had put himself forward for the role of this character's boyfriend.

Thompson was also said to have had access to a private Facebook group of which 70 to 80 teenagers were members. He was arrested at his home address and gave a prepared statement under interview saying that he was "refusing to answer questions because of his perceived belief that there was no evidence".

Following his release on bail, Merseyside Police installed "risk management software" on his phone. But, on January 12 this year, this technology detected that Thompson had visited pornography websites using incognito mode then accessed the girl's Facebook page, as well as logging on to online dating sites.

His criminal record also shows an entry for three counts of gross indecency with a child in 2003, for which he received a two-year community order and a five-year notification requirement. Ms Santamera said he had "lied about his convictions" during application forms relating to his involvement with the theatre company and had shown an "unhealthy interest" in the girl.

Charles Lander, defending, told the court: "There was a lengthy period of compliance. In relation to the previous suspended sentence, he complied fully.

"Because of his criminality, he lost his employment. More significantly, he has lost his home.

"The biggest effect on him is being apart from his wife and two young children. Since January this year, he has been in custody.

"It has been a difficult four months for him. It is his first experience of custody.

"When his daughter first joined the theatre group, he never had ulterior motives. She enjoyed him being there, and he joined the theatre group."

Thompson, who was supported by his wife in the public gallery, admitted two counts of breaching a sexual offences prevention order. Appearing via video link to HMP Altcourse, he was jailed for two years.

Sentencing, Judge Louise Brandon said: "It is quite clear that you had a completely inappropriate interest in her. You stalked her Facebook page in incognito mode while on bail in the hope that you would not be detected.

"You lied on your application form to prevent safeguarding from taking place, and you withheld what you were doing from your offender manager. You appear to be obsessed with her.

"I take into account your problems with your mental health and the impact on your family. I accept that you became involved in the theatre group because of your daughter's interest and not because you were actively looking to offend."

Thompson was also handed a 10-year restraining order. He will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for the same period.

A dad downloaded thousands of sick sexual images of children and stashed them on laptops and hard-drives in his family home.

Martin Mannion, of Springhill Court, Wavertree, amassed his "catalogued library of images" between November 2022 and March 2023. He was caught when police carried out an investigation into those using file-sharing software to make and distribute images of child sex abuse. One IP address, which was used to access a folder containing 4,461 indecent images of children, was traced to a Virgin Media account belonging to Mannion, 61.

Officers attended Mannion's house shortly after 9am, on June 29 2023, while his 11-year-old son was at school. They seized two laptops and two external hard-drives, found to contain thousands of items of child pornography.

In total, officers found 28 images and 30 videos of the most serious category A, four images and six videos category B, and 6,004 images and 54 videos category C. The images were kept in a number of folders on each of his devices, including one marked with his initials, and another called "photos to keep".

Mannion pleaded guilty to the possession of 6,058 of indecent images of children, and three counts of making indecent images of children (categories A, B and C). He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today, May 10, for sentence.

Christopher Taylor, prosecuting, said: "The content of these videos are sadly typical of the type of abuse that this court sees. In each of these videos, in each of these images, there is an abused child somewhere in the world. In terms of victim impact, it's a global trade."

Trevor Parry-Jones, defending, said: "During the time between his arrest and thereafter it has been extremely sobering for him and very difficult. It's of course not only difficult for him, but for his immediate family and his son. His wish, his hope, is that he can soon regain the trust of his family, in particular his wife and his son."

He added: "Having worked 40 years of employment for his family, for his son and his wife, he then went off the rails, and one can only look at his personal circumstances to see perhaps an explanation, an understanding that something changed for him.

"This is a man crying out for assistance. He needs it. He lost his employment as a result of his arrest, and many would say so he should. It had an effect on his wife and son. He gained two alternative places in employment and he lost those again because of the proceedings." He said Mannion, who has no previous convictions, had to rely on his brother for financial support as a result.

Judge Mark Ainsworth said: "It needs to be emphasised this is not a victimless crime. Far from it. Behind each and every photograph is a child being sexually abused. We may never know who they are, we may never know where they are, but the images show children being sexually abused, and plainly that's a matter that the public and indeed the courts find abhorrent, and rightly so. The assumption must be made that if it were not for people like yourself, there would be no marketplace for these images."

He sentenced Mannion to a total of 10 months in prison, suspended for 18 months. He also ordered him to complete two rehabilitation courses and 160 hours of unpaid work, and made a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

A "dangerous and predatory" sex offender who preyed on women was banned from a Liverpool park.

Theo Raphael, of Picton Road, Wavertree, sexually assaulted two women just over a week apart. The 18-year-old appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today, Tuesday May 7, where he was handed 18 months in prison and was banned from entering Mystery Park in Wavertree indefinitely.

The first incident took place at around 6.30pm on December 20 last year on Crosfield Road in Edge Hill. Raphael sexually assaulted a woman in her 60s and as she fell to the ground, a car stopped in the road and Raphael ran off.

The second incident occurred at around 7pm on December 28, on the footpath near to Liverpool Tennis Centre, off Picton Road in Wavertree. A woman in her 40s was walking her dog when Raphael pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

Merseyside Police said following an extensive investigation, including CCTV appeals, Raphael was arrested in early January and charged with attempted rape and two counts of sexual assault. He pleaded guilty to the offences. He has since turned 18 which means he can now be named.

Raphael was jailed for 18 months and issued with a five year sexual harm prevention order. He was also given a restraining order against his two victims.

A grandad was deemed too drunk to be sentenced after sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a train.

Raymond Beckett was so intoxicated that he fell over on the steps outside Liverpool Crown Court as he was due to learn his fate over the vile incident. He harassed the youngster as she made her way home from Liverpool city centre, touching her inappropriately before asking her: "Don't you like being touched?"

The same court heard yesterday that the 17-year-old victim had been waiting to board a train at Central Station with a friend at around 9pm when she noticed the convicted sex offender, who she said "made her feel uncomfortable" and "smelled very strongly of alcohol". Zahra Baqri, prosecuting, described how Beckett then walked behind the girls before approaching them.

The 64-year-old first spoke to the the teen's friend, who "began looking at her phone in an effort to discourage him from communicating with them". He reacted by asking the complainant: "What is wrong with her?"

Beckett, of Sharples Crescent in Crosby, went on to touch her right arm with his hand and added "be careful" while "looking directly at her breasts". She then zipped up her coat after being "made more uncomfortable" by his actions.

At this stage, a Merseyrail worker approached him and said: "So, are you back then?"

Security staff meanwhile "advised the young girls to go to the opposite end of the platform" and enter via a carriage towards the front of the train. But the defendant boarded the service and made his way into the same carriage and sat down next to them.

Beckett then touched her to the shoulder and rubbed her thigh. He went on to grab her hand "tightly" and kiss it, only letting go when she began to have a panic attack.

But her friend told her that her dad would be picking them up from Sandhills Station in a "rouse intended to get the defendant to move away from them". Beckett continued to touch the girl's shoulder however, and she told him: "Don't touch me, I don't like people touching me."

He replied "don't you like being touched?" before his "mood changed" and he began repeating: "I don't want to speak to you. F*** off."

Beckett also called the victim's friend a "p***k" and "tried to block them from the doors" when they got up to leave the train. As they got off, he took the other girl's water bottle and "threw it all over her hands".

He was subsequently identified via CCTV footage and in an identity parade. Under interview, Beckett "denied presence" and said he "didn't use the train that day", but "could not remember what he was doing".

The pervert added that he had spent six weeks in hospital shortly before the incident after suffering a brain injury which affected his memory. He conceded having had an "alcohol dependency", but said it "does not change his behaviour and merely makes him fall over".

Beckett's criminal record shows six previous convictions for six offences. This includes an entry for indecent assault of a female under 14 in 1996.

In a statement which was read out to the court on her behalf, the complainant said: "I had to throw away the clothes I wore that day. The thought of wearing them gave me shivers and reminded me of what happened.

"I get nightmares where I imagine him touching my thigh again. In these dreams, I can't escape and I wake up crying.

"When I go to Liverpool Central, I get a sinking feeling in my stomach when the train pulls up at the station. I feel constantly on edge and look around constantly."

Beckett was due to appear before the court for sentencing on Friday last week. However, he was seen lying down on the steps outside the court on Derby Square beforehand having apparently fallen over on his way into the building.

The defendant, wearing a black suit over a white shirt and black tie, then continued to stumble around as he was helped inside by a relative and security staff. The hearing could not ultimately proceed "due to the level of the defendant's intoxication", and Beckett was remanded into custody over the weekend.

Peter White, defending, told the court on Monday: "It appears that alcohol is the root of the problem here. Mr Beckett accepts that he has been a functioning alcoholic for a number of years.

"He has a bottle of brandy most days, on top of other alcohol. It would appear that, when he is not at that level of intoxication, he is able to avoid causing trouble.

"This gentleman describes his daily life as coming into the city centre, having a drink, watching the buskers and going home. Mr Beckett has had one other custodial sentence.

"It was almost 30 years ago. I think he has had one court appearance since for non-payment of a railway fare.

"He has been an alcoholic for a number of years, and he recognises that. The first 48 hours he has had sober in a long time has been this weekend."

Beckett admitted two counts of sexual assault. Wearing a grey prison issue tracksuit in the dock, he was jailed for nine months.

Sentencing, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC said: "You plainly were significant affected by drink as you were most days, as you were addicted to alcohol. You approached her and her friend and began to pester them.

"In your drunken mind, this all seemed perfectly innocent - but she must have been terrified. She must have feared that she going to be the victim of a much more serious incident.

"You have a limited record of recently previous convictions. Your life is chaotic because of your problems and challenges with drink."

Beckett was also handed a five-year sexual harm prevention order. He will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for 10 years.

A sex offender called a "danger to women" kidnapped his former partner at knifepoint and threatened to "shiv" her and her brother if she tried to escape.

Connor Owen, 30, entered into a relationship with Toni Roberts in April last year and in the early weeks everything seemed prosperous. However, Owen, who has significant mental health issues including schizophrenia, stopped taking his medication in late May despite both the Probation Service and his then partner urging him to continue his dosage.

Liverpool Crown Court heard today, Monday, April 15 that Ms Roberts, who has two children - aged seven and nine - from a previous relationship, decided the pair did not have a future together. However, Arthur Gibson, prosecuting, told the court Owen - a registered sex offender who previously had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl - was not prepared to accept it.

The court heard in early October 2023 he invited her around to his grandparents' home where he lived and grabbed her by the neck and forced a sobbing Ms Roberts into the garden by knifepoint. Ms Roberts only managed to escape the house and back to her own home via taxi when Owen's nan realised something was up.

Owen continued to bombard Ms Roberts with texts and calls which she continued to respond to in a hope of keeping the peace. However, matters came to a head on October 25 last year when Ms Roberts went to the cinema with her two children. She was dropped off at the cinema and then picked up and taken home by her brother Anthony Dennis.

Mr Gibson told the court that the two were outside the front of her house chatting and having a vape when a taxi pulled up. Ms Roberts recalled her brother saying "get back in the taxi lad" before the defendant emerged. She ran back into the house and locked the door while Mr Dennis spoke to the "irate" Owen.

Mr Dennis decided the best way to cool off the defendant was for his sister to speak to him to which she agreed. However, Mr Gibson said "this turned out to be a terrible mistake", with the defendant pulling out a knife, holding it to her back and forcing her to walk down the road away from her house.

Owen told the terrified mum-of-two to "shut up or I will shiv you". He added "by the time the police get here you will be dead". Mr Dennis called the police and followed after the pair in his car. After pulling up alongside the defendant and his sister, Ms Roberts managed to dive into the back seat of the car.

The defendant then ran around towards the open driver's window with the knife, but Mr Dennis managed to pull away, knocking Owen to the ground with his wing mirror. The brother and sister fled back to her house where they locked the door. The defendant ran back to the house and started kicking the front door. Perplexed neighbours came out to see the commotion, including one man who attempted to stop Owen from kicking the door.

He was forced to back off after Owen said "f*** off or stab you". Ms Roberts, Mr Dennis and her terrified children hunkered down inside the house until Owen fled the scene. He was arrested at his grandparents' address at around 9.15pm and told the police he would cooperate.

The knife was recovered and Owen was taken to Belle Vale custody suite where he answered no comment to police questions. Due to his previous sexual offences convictions - where he received a sentence of nine years plus four on extended licence - Owen was returned to prison. However, Mr Gibson said he continued to terrorise his former partner by sending her a letter on November 17 last year while he was behind bars.

In a victim impact statement read to the court by Mr Gibson, Ms Roberts said: "My life and my kids' lives could have been taken away in a blink of an eye...my life will never be the same." She added: "I have been looking over my shoulder in case he has come back to get us.

"I am scared of every Delta taxi that I see. I have had nightmares since, I can't sleep properly, relax or eat a meal. My family could have been three members down. My children say 'is the bad man coming back?' I am scared of the future and know he is capable of the worst."

The court heard Owen has a history of violence, including previous convictions for section 47 assault and assaulting a police officer. He also received a custodial sentence in February 2012 for possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply. However, he received a significant prison sentence on February 2014 for sexual assault and rape of a teenager. He received a further consecutive sentence while in prison in April 2017 for possession of a mobile phone.

Appearing before the court on November 24 last year, Owen entered guilty pleas to threatening with a weapon in a private place; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; kidnap; and two counts of threatening with an article with blade/point in a public place. In mitigation, Sarah Holt, defending, said: "Nothing I am about to say is intended to justify or diminish his acts.

"He apologises to Ms Roberts, regrets his behaviour and fully recognises how frightening this would have been for her." She added there was minimal physical harm, but accepted the "considerable" emotional and psychological harm that the victim would have experienced.

She added it was her submission that the kidnapping was at the lower end of the kidnapping cases that could be heard at crown court. Ms Holt told the court her client had a "damaged childhood which has impacted his adult life" and his best mitigation was his guilty pleas at the earliest opportunity.

In his sentencing remarks, His Honour Judge David Aubrey KC said in his view the offending must be viewed against a background of an abusive relationship after Ms Roberts made the decision to leave for the welfare of herself and her children. He told Owen that the "perceived rejection simmered in your mind and you were unable to accept the relationship was over".

He arrived at her house due to "jealousy and possessiveness", said Judge Aubrey, and Mr Dennis' attempts to calm the defendant by asking his sister to speak with him was like "a red rag to a bull". He said Ms Roberts' victim impact statement showed she and her children were "traumatised, shaking and crying" by the experience. He added the statement speaks of her "anxiety, stress and alarm" about living in constant fear.

Judge Aubrey told Owen that he recognised he suffered from anxiety, unstable personality disorder and schizophrenia and accepted a doctor's recommendation that he was "labouring under the symptoms of his illnesses". He said if Owen had continued to take his medication "it may be a small part of your culpability would have been reduced". However, he added Owen was "determined not to take his medication", despite medical advice and pleas from Ms Roberts.

The judge said: "You are a possessive and jealous man. In 2014 you were found to be dangerous to women, You remain to be dangerous to women and are a significant risk to members of the public." Owen, of Ermine Crescent, Everton, was sentenced to six years, eight months and an extended licence of four years, four months.

Owen, who wore a grey Berghaus top and sported black hair and beard, also received an indefinite restraining order not to contact Ms Roberts in any way.

A man from Old Swan has been sentenced to three years in prison for child sex offences.

Brian Connor, 61, of Elms House Road, in Old Swan, was sentenced today, Thursday 4 April, at Liverpool Crown Court after pleading guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, making indecent photographs of a child and inciting a child aged under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

He was also given a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order will be on the Sexual Offender Register for life.

Connor was arrested after he was found to be interacting online with an undercover officer, who he thought was a child, and engaged in sexual communications.

Detective Constable Julia Jennings said: “The behaviour displayed by Connor is utterly appalling and he deserves to be behind bars.

“Following an investigation, we were able to gather evidence that showed Connor had interacted with someone online who he thought was a child and this communication was sexual in nature.

“If you have experienced any form of sexual abuse, or know of a child being abused, please come forward and report this to police.

“We take all such reports extremely seriously and if you can find the courage to come forward and speak to us we have specially trained officers who will treat you with sensitivity and compassion.”
