Description
Thomas Dodds, 56, attacked his victim as she rested in bed after feeling unwell and vomiting earlier in the evening.
Specialist officers from the Force’s Safeguarding Department immediately launched an investigation after a friend of the victim swiftly reported the offence.
Dodds, of Thames Road, Hebburn, was arrested the same evening and denied the offence.
He was charged with rape and following a four-week long trial at Newcastle Crown Court in December, Dodds of Thames Road, Hebburn, was found guilty by a jury.
He appeared at the same court on Wednesday, where he was sentenced to eight years and six months behind bars.
Dodds has also been made subject to a 12-year sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offender’s register.
Leading on the investigation was Detective Constable Amy Burridge, of Northumbria’s Rape Investigation Team.
