A man who sexually abused a young girl on Boxing Day has been jailed.

"This incident has had a significant impact on my wellbeing and daily life. It affected me so much that I often couldn't sleep properly and would stay awake all night. 

Sometimes, I couldn't get myself out of bed for school. Even when I did manage to fall asleep, I would wake repeatedly throughout the night.  

"I continue to feel scared when I am home alone, particularly if someone knocks at the door. I always fear that it is him, despite knowing that he is not allowed to come near my home."

These are the words taken from the victim personal statement of a girl who was abused by Leeds man Anthony Higo.  

Child safeguarding detectives have commended the courage of the young survivor following the sentencing of Anthony Higo, aged 43.

Higo was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court yesterday (5 August), after being found guilty of sexual assault by touching on a 13-year-old girl. He was denied bail and remanded into custody.

Higo has been sentenced to 21 months imprisonment and placed on the sex offenders register. He is also the subject of both a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The offences against the victim took place on December 26, 2023, and the offending was first reported to police in January 2024, leading to Higo’s arrest.

DC Heather Richmond said: 

“The survivor in this case has shown genuine bravery and determination in coming forwards and then supporting a prosecution against this man.

"We hope seeing him imprisoned can bring them some comfort and we continue to urge all victims of sexual offending to contact us, whether recent or non-recent, so we can create safer communities.”

A Castleford man has been jailed for multiple child sex offences following an investigation by safeguarding officers.

John Godfrey was given a 12-year sentence for carrying out crimes against two girls aged under 13.

The 45-year-old, formerly of Beech Crescent in Castleford, was investigated by officers from Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit after the allegations came to light.

He was charged with the offences, but denied them until the first day of his trial which was due to take place in May.

Godfrey then admitted four counts of sexual assault against one of the victims who was aged under 13 at the time.

He also admitted five counts of sexual assault, against another victim, as well as one count of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and one count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

The offences all took place in Wakefield District between the 2010s and 2022.

Separately, Godfrey also admitted three counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child and possession of extreme pornography.

Appearing before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing on Friday (31 July), Godfrey was given a 12-year sentence.

He will also be subjected to an extended licence for four years and six months once he has served his sentence.

He was given a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Khi Smith who investigated Godfrey, said:

“I’m pleased that Godfrey’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his offending. He is a dangerous individual who has been held accountable for the harm he has caused to children.

“The victims showed immense courage and resilience throughout this investigation and the court process. Speaking about abuse is never easy, and their strength in coming forward has been instrumental in securing this conviction. I would also like to recognise the vital family support they have received.

“I hope this outcome sends a clear message that victims of child sexual abuse will be listened to, supported and taken seriously.

“If you have experienced abuse, whether recently or many years ago, I would urge you to come forward and report it. You may not only find support for yourself but also help protect others from harm.”

A man has been convicted of more than 40 offences committed against five victims following a Leeds Safeguarding investigation.

Paul Benstock, 62, was found guilty yesterday (16 July) following a trial at Leeds Crown Court of a number of sexual offences and physical assaults against both adult and child victims, including 14 counts of rape. These offences took place between 1998 and 2020, when one of the victims came forward to the police.

Benstock, of Appletree Court, East Ardsley, was also identified as being involved in the making of indecent images of children following an operation by the National Crime Agency’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP) and was also found guilty of these offences.

He has been remanded in custody to appear again at Leeds Crown Court on 14  August for sentencing.

Detective Sergeant Michelle Barnes, of Leeds Safeguarding Unit, said:

“We had one victim come forward to us to reporting that they had been the victim of offences at the hands of Benstock. As a result of our enquiries, we identified four other victims who then also had the courage to detail the crimes they had been subjected to.

“Much of Benstock’s offending was against victims who were children at the time. His victims have shown incredible bravery in giving us detailed accounts of what has taken place and then again supporting the trial process by giving evidence when Benstock refused to take accountability for his awful crimes.

“Benstock is yet to be sentenced and I know that that date will be another significant milestone in the journey that his victims have been through, but I do hope that today having got these verdicts that it brings them some comfort knowing that they were believed.

“I do not underestimate how hard it is to take that step to report physical or sexual offences to the police but if you have been a victim, please reach out for help and support when you are ready.”

“I was a teenager who was just finding her place in this world, looking for care, love and acceptance, all of which were sadly lacking in my reality. You took this need and my naivety and warped it and used it to satisfy your paedophilic needs.

These are the words taken from the Victim Personal Statement of a woman who was abused by South Kirkby man Alan Ward when she was a teenage girl.

Ward was jailed today (7 July) for a number sexual offences which took place in the 1980s and 1990s in South Kirkby.

He was aged in his 30s when he started a sexual relationship with the victim who was 14 at the time. The relationship continued until she was in her late teens.

During her early teens, the court was told how Ward, who worked at a petrol station on Barnsley Road in South Kirkby, would sexually assault the girl.

During the first incident, Ward told the victim:

“I’m getting you ready for when you’re sixteen.”

The victim came forward to report Ward in 2020.  This prompted an investigation by the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit which led to Ward, who more recently worked as an ice cream man, being charged with non-recent sexual offences.

Ward denied the allegations made against him. But after a trial at Leeds Crown Court, he was found guilty of four counts of indecently assaulting a girl under 16 which took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was also found guilty of a further sex offence (buggery) which took place over the same period.

Appearing before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing today, Ward, aged 71, of Barnsley Road, South Kirkby, was given a concurrent jail sentence of 13 years.

DC Anna Potton of the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit said:

“The victim has shown immense bravery in coming forward and going through a lengthy legal process in which she had to relive her ordeal by giving evidence against her abuser.  

“Ward is behind bars where he cannot pose a threat to any other children. I hope that his conviction and sentence brings the victim some comfort as she begins to move on with her life.”

Hamdulluh Hamdadd, Rafiullah Naseri, and Amjid Akakhail have been sentenced to a combined total of 20-years behind bars following an investigation into grooming and sexual abuse of a vulnerable 16-year-old girl in Hull.

The men appeared at Hull Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, 25 June 2026) where they were found guilty by a unanimous jury on charges brought against them following an 18-day trial.

Following the verdict, they were sentenced today (Friday, 26 June 2026) at Hull Crown Court.

Hamdulluh Hamdadd, also known as Hamid, 24-years-old, of Park Grove in Hull, an Afghan national who identifies as Arab, was found guilty of intentionally arranging or facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child and intentionally obtaining for himself the sexual services of a child between July 2025 and November 2025.

Hamdadd pleaded guilty at an earlier court hearing to possessing an extreme pornographic image and making an indecent photograph of a child.

He was sentenced to eight years behind bars.

Rafiullah Naseri, also known as Shaheen, 20-years-old, of Spring Bank in Hull, an Afghan national who identifies as Arab, was found guilty of intentionally arranging or facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child and intentionally obtaining for himself the sexual services of a child between July 2025 and November 2025.

He was sentenced to eight years behind bars.

Amjid Akakhail, 22-years-old, of Pearson Street in Wakefield, an Afghan national who identifies as Arab, was found guilty of intentionally obtaining for himself the sexual services of a child between July 2025 and November 2025.

Akakhail pleaded guilty at an earlier court hearing to making an indecent photograph of a child.

He was sentenced to four years behind bars.

All three men were also made subject to lifetime restraining orders, placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, and given Sexual Harm Prevention Orders for life.

An investigation was launched by our Child Sexual Exploitation Team after information was reported to police by professionals who had concerns for a child’s welfare. Officers swiftly responded to these concerns and commenced an investigation, identifying that Hamdadd, Naseri and Akakhail were involved in the exploitation of a 16-year-old girl.

The victim first met Hamdadd by chance when they were both customers at a retail premises in Hull. Following this initial encounter, Hamdadd used calculated tactics to build a relationship based on trust and control. Gifts were used to create a powerful sense of obligation, enabling him to isolate and target the victim for sexual exploitation and to introduce her to the other men involved.

All three men targeted the victim, grooming her to gain her trust before exploiting her and subjecting her to repeated sexual abuse at addresses across Hull.

As the investigation developed, officers identified several addresses linked to the suspects, leading to warrants being executed at addresses in Hull and West Yorkshire with the support of partner agencies in December 2025.  These warrants resulted in the arrests of Hamdadd, Naseri, and Akakhail.

Following their arrests, officers worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to build a compelling case against all three men, and they were subsequently charged and remanded the following day (Thursday, 11 December 2025).

During the trial, jurors were presented with extensive evidence, including witness testimonies, CCTV footage and communication data. This evidence clearly demonstrated the extent of the abuse and the significant impact it had on the victim.

Detective Superintendent Nicole Elliott, who led the investigation, said:

“This has been a complex and sensitive investigation, with the safety and protection of a vulnerable child and the prevention and disruption of further serious offending at its core.

“This case represents a harrowing example of grooming, manipulation and predatory behaviour by three men who deliberately targeted a vulnerable child.  They offered money, alcohol and drugs, using these tactics to gain control before sexually abusing her for their own gratification.

“The victim has shown remarkable courage and strength in extremely traumatic circumstances. She worked closely with our Child Sexual Exploitation Team and partner agencies to explain the abuse she suffered, and her bravery has been central to bringing these offenders to justice.

“I am incredibly proud of the dedication shown by the investigating officers, who worked tirelessly to build a strong evidential case. I would also like to thank our partner agencies for their support throughout this investigation.

“We take all reports of child sexual exploitation and sexual offending extremely seriously. These crimes have devastating and lifelong consequences, what happened to this victim cannot be undone, but we are committed to ensuring offenders are prosecuted and victims receive justice.

“Our dedicated Child Sexual Exploitation Team will continue to support victims, protect vulnerable children and young people, and pursue justice wherever evidence of exploitation or abuse is identified.’’

A judge has warned dangerous sex offender Siah Riley that "a life sentence is not out of the question" after he admitted to an extraordinary series of crimes against 121 young victims.

Derby Crown Court heard how the 35-year-old from Normanton created a fake online persona as a teenage boy, coercing victims—many underage, some as young as 12—into sending indecent photos or videos of themselves performing sexual acts while naked or partially clothed. Riley captured screenshots from Snapchat and organized them into folders named after the victims.

When victims stopped complying, he blackmailed them by threatening to share the explicit material. All victims were real individuals, not decoys from vigilante groups or undercover police.

Appearing from custody, Riley, of Walbrook Road, pleaded guilty to 144 of 145 charges during a 45-minute hearing dedicated to reading them out. An additional count of arranging or facilitating a child sex offence will lie on file, per Derbyshire Live.

Remanding Riley in custody ahead of sentencing later this spring, Judge Shaun Smith KC said:

"Before I sentence you I will need as much information about you in order to do what I am going to do. Obviously it is going to be a prison sentence and obviously it is going to be very long.

"Quite frankly this is a very, very, unusual case even for a judge and ex-barrister as experienced as me. There are 121 victims and these offences are not like, for example, burglaries where there are TICs (other offences to be taken into consideration).

"You have got a serious previous conviction and a life sentence is not out of the question. But if it is not going to be a life sentence it is going to be one of many years."

The offences, spanning 2021 to 2023, targeted mostly UK-based victims, with some possibly abroad. Riley admitted to:

• 12 counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in penetrative sexual activity.
• 9 counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity.
• 45 counts of causing or inciting a child under 16 to engage in penetrative sexual activity.
• 49 counts of causing or inciting a child under 16 to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity.
• 5 counts of engaging in sexual communication with a child.
• 2 counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in prostitution or pornography.
• 22 counts of blackmail.

Judge Smith asked prosecutor Leanne Summers:

"This is an unusual presentation of the evidence, how many of the 121 victims are real and how many are decoys?"

She replied:

"They are all real people but not all have provided (victim impact) statements."

Sentencing is set for May 7, expected to last a full day.

A Castleford man has been jailed for rape and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Alexander Julien was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court last week after being found guilty of the offences by a jury following a trial in December.

The 34-year-old of Graham Drive, Castleford, was jailed for five years for the rape of a female aged over 16, reported to have taken place in Wakefield District in 2022, a charge he denied.

He was also jailed for two years for two offences of coercive and controlling behaviour (to run concurrently with each other but consecutive to the rape sentence) which he also denied.

Appearing before the court for sentencing on Thursday (22/1) Julien was sentenced to nine years and six months.  

This included a further two years and six months sentence for separate drug offences which was ordered to run consecutively.

The convictions followed an investigation by the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit.

Detective Constable Adele Bossons of the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit said: 

“I'm pleased that Julien has been handed a lengthy sentence that reflects the severity of his offending.  

“Victims of this type of offending show tremendous bravery in coming forward and I hope that it brings some comfort to see justice being done after experiencing such an horrendous ordeal.  

“We have dedicated safeguarding teams across West Yorkshire Police who are trained to support victims of sexual abuse and violence. I would encourage anyone who has been victim of offences of this nature to please get in touch.”

A Wakefield man has been jailed for a number of sex offences against a girl.

Christopher Ackroyd was found guilty of the offences at a trial in August.

He was convicted of one count of attempted rape, four counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, one count of sexual assault of a child under 13 and one count of causing a child to watch a sexual act.

Ackroyd was also found guilty of witness intimidation.

The offences were all reported to have taken place earlier this decade.

Appearing before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing today (16/10), Ackroyd, aged 32, of Wasdale Road, Wakefield, was jailed for 10 years (nine years for the sexual offences and a further one year to be served consecutively for witness intimidation).

He was also given a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order and made to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

The conviction follows an investigation by detectives from Wakefield’s District Safeguarding Unit.

Speaking after the sentencing Detective Constable Khi Smith said:

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the victim for coming forward, for talking to us and trusting us.  

“Her courage and bravery throughout this investigation have been key to ensuring that Ackroyd was convicted of these horrendous offences.

“He is a dangerous sexual predator, and I hope that his prison sentence brings her some comfort as she begins to move forward with her life.

“The close partnership working that has taken place between police and other agencies during the course of this investigation has ensured the victim had confidence in telling us what took place.

“West Yorkshire Police has dedicated safeguarding detectives across the entire force who are experienced in investigating non-recent sexual offences. We would encourage victims of this kind of offending to come forward. What you tell us will be investigated and you will be believed.”

These are words taken from the victim personal statement of one of two victims of a man who has now been jailed for the sexual abuse he subjected them to. The other told him:

“You have taken so much from me, for so long. I am choosing now to take back the voice you stole; you will not hurt me anymore. You will never hurt anyone ever again; you will die in prison where you belong.”

Ronald Nicklin, aged 78, of Mill Dam Lane, Pontefract, admitted a catalogue of abuse against the two victims and appeared at Leeds Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, 25 September) where he was sentenced to 18 years and nine months imprisonment, with an extended licence period of one year. He was also put on the Sex Offender Register for life.

The officer in the case, Eve Goodier, of Wakefield District Child Safeguarding Unit, said:

“It is difficult to imagine what Nicklin’s victims have gone through, with the horrific offending against them starting from the age of five.

“The police investigation began after one of the victims came forward to report what had happened to her out of genuine fear of another child being subjected to the sexual abuse that she had experienced.

“I do not underestimate how hard it was for both victims to have to relive what happened to them but the courage they have shown and the detailed statements they have given have ensured that Nicklin has been made to face justice for his actions.

“No sentence will give his victims their childhoods back or take away the memories of the awful abuse that Nicklin put them through, but I do hope that they can take some comfort in knowing that their actions have ensured that other children are now safe from this sexual predator.”

A sex offender who committed multiple rape offences against two young girls in Kirklees has been sentenced to 20 years.

Neil North, aged 39, from Wakefield was sentenced to 16 years in prison with four years extended licence at Leeds Crown Court today ( Friday 15 August) after being found guilty of 17 sexual offences, including 11 of rape, against two young girls.  

The 39-year-old was convicted at a trial in April at which the jury found the just found him guilty of eight sexual offences, including rape and sexual assault, against one victim  

He was found guilty of committing nine offences of rape against the other.  

The sexual offending took place between 2018 and 2021 and was reported to police in May 2021 after victims came forward to disclose the sustained abuse they had suffered.  

North was arrested following the reports which initiated a complex and painstaking investigation by specialist detectives from the Kirklees District Child Safeguarding Unit.  

He was then summonsed to court by postal requisition in October 2023 after charges were authorised by the CPS.  

Following his release from prison, North will also be required to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life.  

He was also made subject of a Serious Harm Prevention Order.

DC Georgina Lumb of West Yorkshire Police, who led the investigation, said:

“North’s offending against his child victims was absolutely appalling, as evidenced by the very large number of serious sexual offences, including multiple rapes, he was convicted of.

“He compounded this horrific offending by forcing his victims and their relatives to go through the ordeal of a trial.  North is without doubt a danger to children, and it is thanks to the bravery of his victims in coming forwards that he is now in a place where we cannot pose a threat to other young people.”  

She added: “We fully recognise how difficult it can be for any victim of sexual offences to contact the police, but can promise that all reports are fully and sensitively investigated.  

“They victim’s needs are absolutely at the heart of everything we do and we can also help victims access the support they will most likely need.”

A predatory paedophile fitted curtains in his car in order to rape an 11-year-old girl.

Christopher Rowbottom, 35, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court to 13 years in prison, after the court heard he added the schoolgirl on TikTok before sending her messages on other platforms as well, including Snapchat, Discord and Roblox.

The court heard he "inserted himself into every facet of this young child's life".

The girl believed she was in a romantic relationship with Rowbottom.

He made lewd sexual suggestions about what he planned to do with her and called her his "wife".

The schoolgirl also sent naked pictures of herself to Rowbottom.

The father-of-two from Featherstone in West Yorkshire bought privacy curtains for his car and drove to Leicester at least four times to meet the girl.

Rowbottom, a warehouse worker, drove to a secluded car park and raped the girl on his back seats.

He was found guilty during a trial of rape, sexual communication with a child, two counts of meeting a child following sexual grooming, digital penetration and making indecent images of children.

Following his arrest, Rowbottom did not answer questions during an interview with police.

His devices were seized and analysed where Prosecutor Christopher Bevan said Rowbottom's searches on the internet "clearly showed an interest in children".

He added that Rowbottom had a "desire to take the virginity of the child".

The man's representative, Mohammed Rafiq, said his client knew "he will be getting a significant sentence. He has to accept that".

Rafiq added that his client was "showing signs of autism" and was a "bit of a loner".

Judge Tahir Khan KC told Rowbottom during sentencing that he "became besotted with her despite the fact she was only 11-years-old".

"You referred to her as your wife and you took advantage of her immaturity, emotionally and sexually," Khan said.

"You bombarded her with disturbing and highly-sexualised images."

Khan said he had travelled "at least four times ... to have sexual contact with her in a car park".

"None of your history can explain, let along justify anything that you did," the judge added.

Rowbottom has been added on the sex offender register for life.

He is also subject to a life-long sexual harm prevention order.

A sexual predator has been jailed for multiple sexual offences in Leeds.    

Last week, Ashley Roberts of Colliery Close, Allerton Bywater was jailed for 26 and a half years at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty of 14 offences against a woman, who was a child when she first met him.   

The 32-year-old was found guilty in a trial in July of seven offences of rape, two counts of sexual assault, kidnap, grievous bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and two counts of threats to kill.  

Roberts was also found guilty of a further offence of child neglect, following enquiries made during the investigation regarding another victim.  

Appearing before the court for sentencing on Thursday 24th July, Roberts was sentenced to a total of 26 and a half years with an extended licence period of five years.  

He was also issued with a restraining order and will be ordered to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely.

In the victim’s own words, she said:  

“I close my eyes and I am back there, in that place, fighting, doing anything to stay alive.  

“You may have kidnapped, raped and beat me but eventually I won’t need to look over my shoulder or be scared because you didn’t break me…”    

Detective Constable Argie Dratzidis of Leeds District Safeguarding Team, who led the investigation said:  

“I firstly want to recognise the sheer bravery of our victim for her courage to come forward to police to report the harrowing abuse she was subjected to but also for navigating the complex and lengthy criminal justice process.  

“Roberts is a violent and predatory sexual offender who refused to take accountability for his actions. The sentence handed to Roberts, should be a reminder that sexual abuse and violence will not be tolerated. We will continue to do all we can to fight for justice.”  

Detective Inspector Nicola Morton-Wiltshire added:  “I would also like to acknowledge the complexity and challenges of this case. The sentencing given to Roberts is a result of the absolute dedication DC Dratzidis and colleagues devoted to their investigation and to getting the justice the victims deserved in order to put a dangerous offender behind bars.

“If you have been raped or sexually assaulted, please know it is never your fault. You will be listened to, supported and it will be dealt with sensitively and with the utmost seriousness.”

A Wakefield man has been sentenced to 12 years in jail after being found guilty of the rape of a teenage girl.

Awais Hamed, aged 30, of Watson Crescent, Wakefield, was found guilty following a trial at Grimsby Crown Court of one count of rape of a female over 16 years and one count of assault by penetration against the same female victim who was a teenager at the time.

Appearing before the court again today, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register.

The court was told the victim had been plied with cocaine, heroin and alcohol before the offences which took place in Wakefield in December 2022.

Hamed gave his victim the money to buy drugs.

This prosecution follows a complex investigation by Wakefield District’s Child Vulnerable to Exploitation Team (CVET).  

Another man, Nadeem Hussain, 47, was jailed last year for offences committed against the same victim as part of the wider investigation.

A man has been given a 24-year sentence for a series of sexual offences against children in Leeds.  

Karl Davison, 43, of Turnberry Gardens, Tingley, approached all of his victims on an electric scooter last summer, in some cases talking to them about the scooter or letting them ride it before assaulting them.  

Following a trial at Leeds Crown Court in February, Davison was convicted of three counts of sexual touching on a child aged under 13, one count of assault by penetration on a child under 13 and one count of sexual assault on a child under 16.  

The offences relate to five female victims aged as young as 10 and occurred in Thorpe, Middleton and Belle Isle on 6 and 7 August last year.  

Davison was caught after officers on patrol in Lofthouse stopped a man matching the description of the offender in the early hours of 8 August.  

Despite giving false details, Davison was quickly identified and arrested.  

Police then searched his home and found a mobile phone containing a large amount of explicit images. Davison pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing indecent images of children before his trial.  

Today (8th April), Davison was given a 24-year sentence consisting of 17 years in prison and a 7-year extended license period. He was also given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order which includes a ban on him entering parts of Wakefield and Leeds. He will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
