A man who has been repeatedly convicted of child sex offences has been jailed again for sending a 15-year-old girl "abhorrent" messages.

James Harbertson, 34, who was previously jailed for nine years for sexually abusing a child, used the handle GeordieBoyJames when he tried to illicit girls to perform sex acts online in 2022, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

After he was jailed for 32 months for offences against four girls aged 14 and 15, police found SnapChat messages to a 15-year-old on a mobile phone, which brought Harbertson back to court.

Harbertson, of no fixed abode, admitted attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and breaching a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) made in June 2013, and was jailed for a further four months.

'Dangerous' offender

Judge Tim Gittins said Harbertson had an "appalling record for being interested sexually in children".

Harbertson's first offence was in 2012 when he was given a community order for possessing indecent images of children.

The following year, he was deemed a "dangerous" offender and jailed for nine years for multiple counts of sexually abusing a child, for which he was also made subject of a SOPO for an indefinite period of time.

That order banned Hartbertson from having any contact with a child under 16 or deleting any logs of his internet activity.

In 2022, police seized a number of phones and found he had been messaging several girls between April and August who were "clearly under the age of 16" on SnapChat, which was a breach of his SOPO.

He had also deleted multiple SnapChat messages, which was another breach, and he was jailed for 32 months.

While he was incarcerated at HMP Durham, police found a further illegal chat Harbertson had had with a 15-year-old girl in June 2022, in which he said he wanted to perform sex acts on her.

Judge Gittins said the girl had never been identified but she "could have a been very vulnerable young girl" and the chat was "abhorrent".

A depraved paedophile has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after he was found guilty by a jury of multiple sex offences against a child.

Scott Daniels abused the youngster, who bravely told her mother of her ordeal.

The victims mother informed Northumbria Police, and officers immediately launched an investigation into Daniels.

He was arrested and in interview denied that any of the offences against the victim had taken place.

Daniels, 37, was charged with three or more counts of rape of a child, three or more counts of sexual penetration and two or more counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, all relating to the same victim.

He denied all of the offences but was convicted by a jury following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in August, after which he was remanded in custody.

Last Friday, December 1, Daniels, of St Johns Green, North Shields, was sentenced to 18 years in prison and a five-year licence period.

Daniels was also handed a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and given a sexual harm prevention order. He will also remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Following his sentencing, Detective Constable Natasha Wilson, of Northumbria Police, said: First and foremost, I would like to pay tribute to the victim in this case who, along with their family, has shown tremendous bravery.

No child should ever have to experience any type of abuse, and I hope this sentence shows we will absolutely not tolerate offenders like Daniels by bringing them to justice.

Det Con Wilson added: Daniels is a dangerous individual and it is only right that he is removed from the community and put behind bars for a considerable period of time where he cannot cause harm or suffering to anyone else.

As a Force, we will continue to protect our communities by pursing predators such as him, preventing these vile offences from being carried out and offering any necessary support to anyone who comes forward.

A dangerous sex offender who fled to America to evade justice has been jailed for more than six years.

Prolific Wayne Wilson appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Friday, October 8, where he was sentenced for sexually abusing a child.

The court heard how Wilson, who was already the subject of a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) following convictions for voyeurism and indecent images, fled the country in 2018 despite being under investigation in relation to a report of sexual abuse.

Detectives from Northumbria Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT) immediately began trying to trace Wilson with the help of international law enforcement.

Enquiries later revealed he had fled to Dublin, then onto the United States.

Determined officers continued to work closely with Homeland Security and a range of American authorities, tracking him down in Kansas.

Wilson was finally detained in April 2021 and returned to the UK in June where officers charged him with three counts of sexual touching on a child under 13 and remanded him into custody.

The 38-year-old, of no fixed abode, admitted all charges and on Friday and appeared at Newcastle Crown Court where he was jailed for six years and two months.

Speaking after the sentencing, the officer in charge of the case, Detective Constable Elizabeth Biggins from POLIT said: “The fact that Wilson will spend a considerable time behind bars is welcome news to me and shows we will not sit back when seeking justice for victims.

“This man is a prolific paedophile who spent years on the run trying to avoid being brought to justice for a series of despicable offences.

“I hope this goes to show the lengths we are prepared to go to in order to protect children and bring offenders to justice. I want to thank our partners from Homeland Security in the USA for their support with this investigation as well as the wider POLIT team, who never gave up.”

Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Ord, who leads POLIT, praised the hard work and determination of her team, and the lengths they went to in order to trace Wilson.

She added: “This was a complex investigation which spanned two continents, multiple time zones and jurisdictions.

“Despite the obvious challenges, Det Con Biggins refused to give up and worked regularly with law enforcement in the USA to make sure no stone was left unturned.

“I am so proud of her achievements in making sure a dangerous and brazen sex offender was brought back to the UK to be held accountable for the vile crimes he committed.”
