David Charles Jones Jailed for Five Years for Child Sexual Assaults
David Charles Jones, 61, of Hamlington Avenue, Gwersyllt, Wrexham, has been sentenced to five years in prison at Caernarfon Crown Court after being found guilty of seven counts of indecent and sexual assaults on a child under 13.
The court heard that Jones inappropriately touched the victim both on and under her clothing on multiple occasions and made her touch him. The abuse took place when she was a child; she did not recognise it as wrong at the time and only disclosed it to her mother years later as an adult.
Reading her victim impact statement, the woman described lasting trauma including severe nightmares, difficulty sleeping, and PTSD for which she takes antidepressants. She said: “I have found it really difficult to put into words how I'm feeling about things. Over the years, I have just got used to keeping things inside, but I knew I was going to have to tell someone as I was unable to sleep as the nightmares were horrible. I would punch and pinch my legs out of anger because inside I wanted to scream...I would punch myself hard just to stay awake as the fear of sleeping was just too much.”
She moved away from North Wales for work, partly to reduce the chance of encountering him, and has paused travel plans to focus on recovery. She told the court she wants to feel normal, hopes one day to be a mother and wife, and does not want the abuse to shape her future: “I don't want what has happened in my past to become my future. I want a life with no more secrets, nightmares and tablets. I want to be a mum, a wife and most of all happy. I want him to just admit what he has done rather than put me through all this. I want him to be too scared to even dream of doing this to another child...He stole part of my childhood I can never get back.”
Defending, Henry Hills said Jones has no previous convictions, a strong work ethic, and limited intellectual abilities.
Judge Nicola Jones imposed an immediate custodial sentence, stating: “You subjected her to sexual abuse on a regular basis on multiple occasions... You were convicted after trial...it's clear that you've shown no remorse or insight into her suffering.” The judge accepted he was previously of good character with no evidence of further offending but said the public, particularly female children, needed protection due to his lack of insight.
Jones was also made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning unsupervised contact with any female child under 16, and an indefinite restraining order preventing contact with the victim.
