Description

A rapist has been jailed for 20 years for subjecting his victim to a "prolonged campaign of sexual and physical abuse" that caused her life-changing injuries.

Joseph Wright, 28, of the Bushey area, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Tuesday (March 31) after being convicted of four counts of rape, sexual assault by penetration, grievous bodily harm, two counts of coercive and controlling behaviour, threats to kill, and actual bodily harm.

The abuse spanned 2020 to 2024. It began with assaults in March and April 2020 — the start of an escalating pattern of intimidation and control involving kicking and verbal degradation that left the victim distressed and isolated, police said.

In December 2022, Wright caused her life-changing injuries during a row at her home; she felt unable to report it due to his coercive control. Another violent incident occurred at a public event in 2024, which she minimised to police out of fear.

She ended the relationship on December 31, 2024. Wright was arrested on July 8, 2025, and charged the following day.

Detective Constable Jason Tinsey, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s sexual offences investigation team, said:

“The victim in this case has shown tremendous courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation through what has been an incredibly distressing experience. Her strength has been vital in ensuring Joseph Wright has been held accountable for his actions.

“Abuse of this nature is utterly unacceptable and will never be tolerated. We remain committed to protecting victims, pursuing perpetrators and making sure that those responsible for such serious harm face justice.”
