A PAEDOPHILE who secretly used his Xbox to search for "teenage porn" has been jailed.

Registered sex offender Steven Canning had been at home when police arrived "unannounced".

The 37-year-old of Grayson Court in Chandler's Ford had previously been found in possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornography.

He was made the subject of a decade-long sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

They gave Canning the option to produce any unregistered devices but he denied owning any.

Prosecuting, Leigh Hart told how officers then called the number on the booklet and a phone started ringing from inside a cupboard.

Canning's SHPO means he must tell police about any device he owns with internet access and he must present these to officers when requested.

Appearing before Southampton Crown Court on Monday, he faced charges of breaching his SHPO and also breaching a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 24-months.

Canning pleaded guilty to all charges on June 22 this year.

During another "unannounced home visit" on November 27 last year, officers asked Canning if he owned any internet-enabled devices.

He admitted owning an Xbox but claimed it was not connected to the internet.

However, Canning had lied.

Officers found the games console did have an internet connection and further investigations revealed it had been used to search for "teenage pornography".

Defending, Keely Harvey said how Canning is still at a loss and unable to provide any answers.

She said how he had just lost his father to lung cancer and that "at that point, he was down".

Furthermore, Canning "is willing and ready to do" a programme for men who been convicted of a sexual offence.

During sentencing, Judge Christopher Parker QC said: "You need help. You will I hope get help in custody."

He jailed Canning for 27 months.

A former police officer who was jailed after he was caught with indecent images of children has been thrown back behind bars after he was caught using a laptop.

David Pamment was jailed for eight months in March last year after he was caught with 31 indecent images of children.

The 55-year-old was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order, banning him from using a laptop without telling the authorities.

But when officers attended his Eastleigh home after his release they found a laptop – which had not been registered with police.

Now Pamment, who worked as a police officer for the Ministry of Defence, has been jailed again after admitting one count of breaching his sexual harm prevention order.

Southampton Crown Court heard how police originally visited Pamment’s home, in Charlie Soar Court, on February 11, 2018.

When they examined his electronic devices, they found a total of 31 indecent images, including 17 category A images, 12 category B and two category C.

Pamment pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of a child and was jailed for a total of eight months.

Prosecutor Jane Terry said that Pamment was released in July last year, after serving half of his sentence.

She said Pamment was twice taken through the terms of his sexual harm prevention order, which included a requirement to register an internet enabled computer within three days of purchase.

But the court heard that during an unannounced visit to his property on October 4, police discovered a laptop in his living room.

Pamment was sentenced to nine months in prison.

His 10 year sexual harm prevention order and 10 year notification requirements will continue.

A LORRY driver who videoed himself performing a sex act while in his vehicle and sent it to what he thought was a 13-year-old girl is due back in court tomorrow.

Michael Thomas Taylor is due to be sentenced for one count of fraud and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Christopher Halloran, 67, formerly of Eastleigh, was jailed for over 20 years at York Crown Court for the “systematic” sexual abuse of his helpless victims – some as young as three and four – who were sworn to secrecy by the sexual predator.

Halloran plied some of the victims with cigarettes and alcohol as part of the grooming process, said prosecutor Paul Abrahams.

He abused children at properties in Hampshire and Selby, North Yorkshire.

Mr Abrahams said the “three decades of abuse” lasted from September 1986 to 2018, during which Halloran urged some of the victims – both girls and boys – to join him in “games of dare” before exposing himself and assaulting them.

Halloran was in his mid-30s when he began abusing one girl in Hampshire.

On another occasion, Halloran took a victim out in his car and sexually assaulted her in woods. Another attack happened at a bird hide in North Yorkshire.

“He clearly groomed (the victim), buying her cigarettes and alcohol,” said Mr Abrahams. “This made (the girl) feel confused and trapped.”

The victim said she felt “sick and dirty” afterwards.

One boy was abused on “multiple” occasions. Like many of the victims, he said he felt “trapped” by Halloran’s “sick little games”.

Father-of-three Halloran, of Sherburn, near Selby, North Yorkshire, was arrested in 2018 and

admitted 26 charges including two counts of rape, indecency with a child, sexual assault of children under 13 and assault by penetration. Eight other charges were left on file.

He appeared for sentence when some of the victims were sitting in the public gallery.

All the victims – none of whom can be named for legal reasons – said they were still suffering the effects of Halloran’s abuse. Some of them had lost their jobs or had to take time off work due to the toll on their health. For others it had led to the collapse of their marriages.

Others said they had suffered from severe mental-health issues which had led to depression, eating disorders, self-harm, nervous breakdowns, panic attacks, nightmares and flashbacks.

Defending Abbie Whelan said an expert’s report concluded that her client was a danger to children and he accepted that he “will almost inevitably die in prison”.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC told Halloran: “You are dangerous (to children) and you will be sentenced as such.”

Halloran was given a 19-year jail term. If and when he is ever released, he will have to serve an extended eight-year period on prison licence. He was ordered to sign on the sex offenders’ register for life and made subject to a sexual-harm prevention order, which is also for life.

A man from Eastleigh sourced indecent images and videos of children from an internet chat room, a court heard.

Zach Mockford used a registration-free chat site to search for people to send him images, some showing children as young as four being sexually abused.

When police caught wind of his activities, they searched his laptop and found more than 200 videos and hundreds of illegal images, as well as more than 50 bestiality videos showing humans engaging in sexual activity with various animals

Prosecuting, Simon Wiltshire told Southampton Crown Court that police visited Mockford at his address in Cranbury Road, Eastleigh.

They checked the 24-year-olds laptop and found 222 videos, almost half of which were the most serious, category-A images.

Police also found more than 100 still indecent images as well as 103 images of bestiality, both moving and still.

Mockford pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images and one of making extreme images related to the bestiality images.

He was given a suspended sentence by Judge Gary Burrell, who said: You now know that these are real children being abused in real life.

"Some of the videos show children as young as four being abused.

They must have been suffering both physically and mentally."

Mockfords nine-month sentence was suspended for two years.

He was also given a five-year sexual harm prevention order and will be made to sign the sex offenders register, which he will be on for the next ten years.

A MAN has lost his job and his wife after being caught with more than 30,000 indecent images of children.

Graham Kenrick, 65, had been searching for indecent images of children for 10 years or more although “he knew he was wrong”, Southampton Crown Court heard.

When police officers seized his hard drive and computer towers in June 2017 they found video and images depicting the abuse of children “as young as two months,” the court was told.

Kenrick, of Brookwood Avenue, Eastleigh, was found in possession of 879 Category A still images and 18 films; 692 Category B still images and one video and “somewhere near” 30,000 Category C still images and four videos.

He was also found in possession of 15 further films of women involved in sexual activities with dogs or horses and a film of girls as young as five-year-old being raped.

The court heard how Kenrick used to self-harm himself.

Richard Tutt, defence, said Kenrick “was getting sexual gratification for self-harming himself” and not “for the material itself”.

The court heard how Kenrick, who for the past 15 years worked for a charity where disabled people made furnitures, lost his job and his wife left him after 31 years of marriage.

In mitigation Mr Tutt said Kenrick did not look at all the materials and described him as “a man of previous good character” who is currently under medication, after being diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder and depressive disorder.

“He felt some relief when he was arrested because he had to stop and since that time he has made effort to seek help,” Mr Tutt said.

And added: “He can’t change what he did and he is appalled by it, he has already suffered significant consequences. He has already lost a great deal.”

Mr Tutt said: “He was ashamed of what he had been doing and he would co-operate with the investigation. He pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. He was downloading this material knowing he was wrong to do so.”

Mr Tutt also said there’s a low risk Kenrick will commit further sexual offences.

Sentencing, Judge Peter Henry said: “The effect of what you have done is not simply looking at appalling images because behind these images there are real children.

“Children who have suffered physically and have suffered or will suffer considerable psychological damages. It’s because people are prepared to look at this type of material that children get abused. The only sentence that can be justified is an immediate custody sentence.”

Kenrick was given a total of 12 months.

A Sexual Harm Prevention Orders has also been made and will be valid for 10 years.

Kenrick had previously pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images, possessing a prohibited image and possessing an extreme pornographic image.

A FORMER Basingstoke school teacher has been jailed for 15 years for a ''systematic abuse of trust'' by carrying out sexual assaults on two boys, one aged just seven.

Lloyd Dennis, 33, of Sopwith Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire, pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court to 12 charges of sexual offences against the young boy and his older brother, who was aged between 12 and 14 at the time.

The defendant also admitted seven charges relating to indecent images of children, including one of his younger victim, and one count of extreme pornography.

Judge Peter Henry explained that the sentence he imposed would consist of 15 years in custody with an extended period of eight years.

He also made Dennis subject to a sexual harm prevention order and ordered him to pay a victim surcharge.

He said: ''I accept that there is no suggestion here that you have sexually abused young pupils but nonetheless it's deeply troubling that you should obtain such a position.''

He added that the defendant's choice to become a teacher ''in my judgment is an indication of how you are out of control when it comes to young children.

''I do consider you pose a high risk to young children and I feel it's appropriate to impose on you an extended period of imprisonment.''

He added: ''You were abused as a child, that is deeply regrettable and a sad history but, in the circumstances, I do not regard that as mitigation in terms of lessening the impact you have had on your victims.

''You were aware of the damage, you were a qualified primary school teacher.''

Rob Welling, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant ''systematically abused'' the trust placed in him by the mother of the boys who allowed the younger sibling to stay overnight at his home where the offences happened.

Mr Welling said when these offences, which happened between September 2013 and November 2014, were revealed, the boy's older sibling suffered flashbacks to his youth and recalled the defendant's abuse of him dating back to the late 1990s when Dennis was aged about 16.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the boys' mother said the offences had left her ''completely stunned'' and she said: ''I feel guilty I didn't notice anything.''

She said that she had trusted Dennis and had even sought his advice because of his position as a teacher.

She said: ''I thought as a primary school teacher he would be able to help, he used to blame other people but he was to blame.''

Describing the effect on her younger son, she said: ''He is not the same little boy he once was, he is full of anger. He has constant nightmares about what happened.''

David Lyons, defending, said that his client was ''deeply remorseful'' and said he had himself been abused as a child.

He said: ''It's tragically true that very often those who offend were offended against as a child and there is a cycle.''

He added: ''He is, when confronted with the enormity of what he has done, deeply remorseful and while he accepts the family may reject it as too little too late, he would like to convey his sincere apologies and regret for what he has done.''

Dennis taught at a number of schools across Hampshire including Basingstoke College of Technology, in Worting Road, where he was a lecturer in health, social care and education, and at Marnel Junior School, in Popley Way, Popley, where he was a classroom teacher. 

Mr Lyons said: ''He will never teach again, this is entirely unrelated to his employment, he will be barred from teaching and having anything to do with young people and will have his life very much restricted.''

Detective Constable Sarah Fox, officer in the case, said: “This was a complex and disturbing case.

"Lloyd Dennis gained the trust of both these boys and used that power to sexually abuse them repeatedly.

"I would like to thank both victims and their families for their patience and understanding throughout this investigation.

"It has been an extremely difficult time for them and I hope that through these convictions and the sentence they can come to terms with what happened."

A high-flying university student who gorged himself on a diet of pornography has been jailed.

Timothy Garvey downloaded images of young children being sexually abused by adults, Preston Crown Court was told.

The pictures were so horrible a trial heard that fellow students who accidentally came across them in shared accommodation immediately called in police.

Garvey, 21, was studying English Language and Linguistics at Lancaster University and living above The Royal Hotel in the city when the offences came to light.

He denied 10 charges of possessing indecent photographs of a child but was convicted by a jury after a three day trial.

Garvey maintained he had been sent the material unsolicited by e-mail and had not viewed them.

But the court was told by Iain Simkin, defending, that he now accepted his guilt and knew he had done wrong.

After leaving home and going into accommodation he had gorged himself on a diet of pornography, Mr Simkin told the court.

It was accepted the images were revolting.

For Garvey, a man with no previous convictions and a promising future up to his conviction, prison would be particularly hard on him, added Mr Simkin. But Judge David Boulton, who sentenced Garvey to four months in prison, said the victims were young children who had been horribly abused for the purpose of others watching them.

The similar cases resulting from the huge FBI investigation into worldwide internet porn had led to the Court of Appeal setting sentencing guidelines, explained the judge.

A prison term was inevitable whatever his personal circumstances, the judge told Garvey.

A spokesman for Lancaster Police said: The sentence reflects te seriousness of the crime and should act as a deterrent to others participating in this type of activity.

A DISTRAUGHT childs revelation to school staff triggered a major police investigation that has led to a jobless Chandlers Ford man being jailed for ten years.

The girl, who became so upset during a lesson she had to be taken out of class by a teaching assistant, disclosed how she had been repeatedly sexually abused.

Southampton Crown Court heard that, suspecting his abuse had been discovered, Stuart Bowman took an overdose of tablets and was treated in hospital.

Bowman, 38, of Oakmount Road, Chandlers Ford, was convicted of rape and false imprisonment of a woman, which he had denied. He admitted two charges of causing actual bodily harm and committing three sex offences against the girl.

The youngster told police his abuse had also led her to self harming and thinking of killing herself. She added: I am happy now he cant harm me anymore.

Judge Gary Burrell QC told Bowman he considered him a dangerous offender and a high risk of causing harm to children. He was placed on the sex offenders register for life and under the terms of a sexual offences prevention order, is banned from having unsupervised access to girls under 16. He was also given a three-year extended sentence.

The judge said his offending had been committed against a rising use of amphetamine.

In mitigation, James Newton-Price said Bowman recognised his abuse of the girl was immoral and repugnant, and he had shown an insight into the impact of his behaviour.

Wiping tears from his eyes, Bowman heard the barrister add he had destroyed his relationship with his children.

After the case one of his victims described Bowman as an evil monster.

Speaking to the Daily Echo said she was pleased to see him jailed as it marked the closure of an horrific episode in her life.

I feel I can move on now knowing he is behind bars and get on with my life with my family, said the woman.

Trustees of Open Sight were unaware that Chris Hedges had been jailed after admitting five cha-rges of having unlawful sex with a 14-year-old girl.

They didn’t carry out a criminal records check when they recruited him because the job didn’t involve him coming into contact with young people.

However, the Daily Echo has discovered that his role changed over time and he ended up dealing with vulnerable youngsters, even though he had been banned for life from working with children.

Hedges’ sick past only came to light after he was dismissed from his chief executive post for alleged bullying. Trustees told the Daily Echo that he would never have been offered the job if they had known about his convictions.

None of the current board of trustees of Open Sight, which supports thousands of people with sight loss across Hampshire, were in place when Hedges was appointed more than four years ago.

But a spokesman for the charity, which has bases in Eastleigh and Bishopstoke, confirmed Hedges had never made anyone aware of his previous conviction, or the fact that he is on the sex offenders’ register.

A SERIAL paedophile who repeatedly groped a young boy has been locked up indefinitely after being branded a danger to the public.

Former football referee Michael Jalland, 54, has now been convicted three times of offences against boys he met in pool and snooker halls.

He will serve a minimum two years before a parole board will decide when he is safe to return to the community.

The former Bournemouth resident had admitted five specimen counts of indecent assault at a Southampton social club.

Members noticed how he was keen to play pool with the victim, getting close to the boy as he helped him play shots before touching him.

Jalland, living in Chamberlayne Road, Eastleigh, was convicted at Southampton Crown Court.

Paul Dugdale, prosecuting, said a woman who came into the premises saw Jalland and knew he had previous convictions.

That led to the boy's mother asking the victim if anything had happened and he admitted it had.

Jalland in interview accepted it had happened between 20 and 30 times.

Judge Derwin Hope said the probation report assessed Jalland as being a high risk of causing harm to children and sexual reconviction.

Jalland was first convicted at Bournemouth Crown Court in 1998 of indecently assaulting boys aged seven, eight and 11.

He offered one victim 50p to pacify him.

He was was jailed for 15 months, and thrown out of his job refereeing local games for Hampshire Football Association.

During the trial, police told the judge he was seen near playing fields and swimming pools.

He was also jailed for another two years for committing more offences while serving part of his sentence living in the community, in Southampton Street, Southamp-ton, in 2000.

He met an 11-year-old boy playing pool and indecently assaulted him after luring him into a public lavatory.

Jalland was arrested after the boy's mother recognised him from a Daily Echo court report.

THE former Vicar of White Waltham developed a fondness for a choirboy which "crossed that terrible line" to become a physical relationship. Consequently, he would have to bear the penalty and guilt for the rest of his life, said the defence counsel at Maidenhead Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The former vicar, Kenneth Norman Senior (62) now of Hope Rd, Leighton, Welshpool, Powys, pleaded guilty to two offences of indecently assaulting a male person under the age of 13 years.

He asked for 22 similar offences to be taken into consideration.

He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for each offence, to run concurrently, but suspended for two years.

Prosecuting solicitor Mrs. Janet Fedrick told the court that in June 1982 the boy joined the choir at White Waltham church, where Senior was then vicar.

A few weeks after he joined, and for 18 months or two years, he was indecently assaulted by Senior on a number of occasions.

GIFTS

The boy would be asked if he wished to help with odd jobs. On various occasions, he would be taken to the bell tower, fondled and masturbated.

The boy also went on holiday with the vicar, to Tenerife, Fordingbridge, and the New Forest, Hants, where similar acts took place.

Mrs. Fedrick said the boy had never seen Senior naked. And at no time did Senior invite the boy to mutually exchange sexual expressions with him. There was no question of coercion or roughness.

"It was done, obviously, through his fondness for the boy," said Mrs. Fedrick.

She said the boy used to be paid both for the odd jobs, and his visits to the bell tower. Amounts would be entered on bits of paper, and on occasions he would receive gifts. On one occasion he received a bicycle.

Eventually the boy left the choir.

"He says he did not like these events," said Mrs. Fedrick. "He told no one, and did not tell the vicar that he did not.

"But if he could get out of choir practice, he did. Eventually, he became ill and left the choir about two years ago. It is only recently, in the middle of the summer of this year, that he told his mother about these events."

Defence counsel Mr. Richard Beckett said that this was one of those sad, wretched cases that made the role of magistrates particularly difficult and unenviable.

But much of the punisment had already been administered, or would be, over the coming years, to somebody whose family relationships were affected; selfesteem impaired; and whose role in life had gone.

"It is an isolated single relationship, one of fondness which should never have been allowed by Senior, the much older person, to have become a physical relationship. Sadly, once that terrible line had been crossed, it did continue in the same vein for a considerable period.

NO COERCION

"The police must, understandingly, have been aware throughout this matter that there was an absence of nastiness about the relationship. An absence of coercion, an absence of any sort of force, and the obvious presence of a considerable amount of affection," said Mr. Beckett.

He said Senior wished to put on record an apology to the boy and his parents.

Mr. Beckett said that, after working in South Africa, Senior felt he wished to join the Church, and was ordained in 1957. He came to White Waltham in 1974. He had worked hard in the parish. He had used his vicarage often to assist families in particular need. He had an excellent reputation. He was married, with four grownup children, who were supporting him.

Mr. Beckett said that Senior's wife had a stroke in early November.

"The feeling that haunts Senior is the knowledge that it cannot be entirely ruled out that it is connected with these incidents, he said.

PSYCHIATRY

Mr. Beckett said that Senior had been undergoing a psychiatric course for sometime. He obviously wished to ensure that there was no repetition of this type of offence.

Asking the magistrates not to send Senior to prison, Mr. Beckett said: "So much of the penalty and guilt is to be borne from this day onward for the rest of his life. Older people who have fallen from grace suffer more than those who have ample life before them to make amends."

Kenneth Senior graduated from Leeds University with a B.Sc. He was a school master for a number of years before joining the Church. St. Mary's was his first parish.

He stood as an Independent candidate for the Hurley ward at the District Council elections in 1979, but failed to win a seat.

Bishop's statement

AFTER the hearing, the following statement was issued by the Bishop of Reading, the Right Rev. Graham Foley: I cannot and I would not attempt to play down the gravity of what Mr. Senior has done. A parish priest is placed in a position of great trust and responsibility, and it is clearly a cause for great sadness when, through his frail humanity, he is unequal to this.

Had I had any suspicion of this at an earlier date, and had I been convinced of its substance, I would of course have suspended Mr. Senior at once. However, I had no idea of what was happening until police investigations were under way. As soon as I saw Mr. Senior he offered his resignation which I accepted at once, and he ceased to be Vicar of Shottesbrook with White Waltham as of that moment.

Everyone in this case has suffered appallingly, and the Church's first concern must be to minister to those who are hurt. That, of course, includes Mr. Senior himself. He did something very wrong, but he admitted what he had done, and immediately resigned his living. Now there are lives to be rebuilt, and a parish to be reassured of the pastoral concern and care of the Church.
