A Coventry man has been convicted of serious sexual offences against a young boy.

Jonathan Philp pleaded guilty to rape and other sexual offences.

The boy came forward and reported the abuse, and Philp went on to admit the offences.

Philp, of The Monks Croft, pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until sentencing later this year.

A Coventry man has been jailed for raping a woman while she slept.

Leslie Mangwa was sentenced today after he attacked the woman, who was sleeping after a night out in January last year.

On the night of the attack, the woman was asleep when she awoke to find Mangwa sexually assaulting her.

She screamed and made him leave the room.

Shortly after the rape, the woman reported her story to the police.

Thanks to her bravery in coming forward, officers identified and arrested Mangwa, 33 and charged him with rape.

In interview, Mangwa denied rape, claiming what happened had been consensual.

Despite this, he was found guilty at trial on 4 August and sentenced on 29 August.

Mangwa, of William Hillman Court, was jailed for eight years, along with being given a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

A man has been jailed for seven years for non-recent sexual offences against three women.

In 2022, our Child Abuse, Trafficking and Exploitation Team launched an investigation into 67-year-old Graham Cockerill of Elwy Circle, Ash Green, Coventry.

Cockerill was reported to have sexually assaulted three women. The first victim, (then under 13), reported assaults by Cockerill taking place in the Coventry area between 2016 – 2022. Another victim made themselves known to investigators and reported offences by Cockerill throughout the 1970s, between the ages of nine and 14, in the Meriden area.

Through the course of the investigation, a further victim was identified who was aged in her 40s at the time. She sadly passed away in 1995 and had never reported the offences to police.

In June, following a trial at Warwick Crown Court, Cockerill was found guilty of:

• Three counts of sexual assault on a girl under 13 by touching
• Two counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14
• One count of indecent assault of a female over 16 years of age

On Tuesday last week (5 August), he was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment at Warwick Crown Court. He was also given a 10-year restraining order for one of the victims, a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and will also be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

“Despite 30 years having passed since her death, and having never reported the crime to the police, we worked tirelessly to gather evidence to ensure we could bring Cockerill to justice. Thankfully, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided to progress with this case thanks to statements from living witnesses about the victim and the offender disclosing details of the crime to them.

A man who went on the run to avoid being arrested for rape has been jailed.

Scott Salisbury attempted to flee after an investigation into accusations of raping a young girl in Coventry.

Salisbury raped the girl, who was a teenager at the time of the offences, on a number of occasions over a four year period.

The matter was reported to us after she bravely told the police her account.

The 39-year-old from Coventry became aware he'd been reported and attempted to evade capture.

Following a 10-day search, officers arrested Salisbury with the help of our Dogs and Drones units in December 2024.

Salisbury was interviewed by officers from our Rape and Serious Sexual Assault (RASSO) team, providing no comment to the questions put to him.

Our investigation involving helping the female find the right support to empower her to face Salisbury in court.

Now an adult she courageously took to the witness stand at court to provide a personal statement.

Salisbury pleaded guilty to rape and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Salisbury, from the Tile Hill area of Coventry, was sentenced in his absence to 22 years and six months in prison at Warwick Crown Court on 3 July.

He was also given a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order against the woman for life.

She was thanked by the judge in court, who also said Salisbury's absence from court for sentencing was failing to do the one decent thing he could do.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Evie Griffiths, from the Eastern RASSO team, said: "This was a truly horrendous case, and the fact Salisbury went on the run to try and avoid facing up to what he had done speaks volumes.

"Thanks to her bravery in coming forward to tell her story, and put her trust in the police and criminal justice system, we have taken a truly dangerous sex offender off the streets.

"In the RASSO team, we investigate all reports of rape and sexual abuse, no matter how long ago they took place.

A Coventry man has been convicted of indecent exposure and sexual assault following an incident in the city this week.

Ranjit Sadra appeared before magistrates today (24 April) where he pleaded guilty to the charges.

The 45-year-old approached a woman in War Memorial Park in Cheylesmore, exposed himself and then undressed while other members of the public were nearby, including young children.

He also touched another woman inappropriately elsewhere in the park.

Officers were called to the park where they arrested Sadra and charged him with indecent exposure and sexual assault.

At his hearing today, Sadra pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody before his sentencing at Coventry Crown Court on 22 May.

A man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison having been found guilty of sexual offences, including child sex offences, in Southampton and Coventry.

David Blackstock, 57, of Harnall Lane West in Coventry, appeared at Southampton Crown Court on Friday (24 January) for sentence having previously being found guilty by a jury of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault and four counts of indecent assault.

The court heard how in August 2020 the victim, who is now in her 40s, contacted police to report that Blackstock had raped her when she was just 13 and he was 29-years-old. The woman reported that Blackstock had lied about his age when she first met him in 1996, telling her that he was 19, however within a matter of months she realised his true age when he began receiving 30th birthday cards. The court was told how the victim went on to be subjected to controlling, abusive and violent behaviour at the hands of Blackstock.

Blackstock pleaded not guilty to the offences he was charged with, however a jury found him guilty on August 19 2024 following a trial at Southampton Crown Court.

He has now been sentenced to 17 years in prison. He was also made subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order in relation to the victim.

A Coventry man who groomed what he believed to be two teenage girls has been jailed. Ahmed Kajee was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court.

Police arrested 55-year-old Kajee in Coventry in February. He believed that he was speaking to 13 and 14-year-old girls, who were found to be decoys from Saving Childrens Futures.

Kajee pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. He also admitted to inciting a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity, Warwick Crown Court said.

Kajee, from Coventry, was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on Wednesday, December 18. He will spend two years in jail.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “It is illegal for anyone to have, share, or make sexual images or videos of people under 18. We will decide whether to take action depending on things like evidence of exploitation or grooming.

“Children can become victims of abuse on the internet through online games, social networking sites, and apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. To help protect children while they are online, encourage them to talk to you about how they use the internet and show you what they do.

“Have an agreement in place and set boundaries for their internet use, such as when and where they can use their devices and for how long. Check age ratings that come with games, apps, films, and social networks to confirm whether they are suitable.

“Activate parental controls on your home network and all devices, including mobile phones and game consoles, and safe settings can also be activated on sites such as Google and YouTube. Make sure they are aware of the risks of sharing images online and that you both know how to remove content should you need to.”

A man from Coventry has been jailed for 15 years after abusing three young children.

Derry Tift, aged 49 admitted to 16 counts of sexual offences against three girls between 2001 and 2013 and three counts of making indecent images of children at an earlier hearing at Warwick Crown Court.

The disturbing incidents came to light when officers from the Online Child Sexual Exploitation Team conducted a warrant at Tift’s home address acting on intelligence that he had been accessing indecent images of children on the internet. 

After the warrant, a survivor of Tift’s abuse bravely came forward to tell officers of her ordeal when she was younger.

Thanks to the woman’s courage, this prompted another two survivors to come forward. 

Officers also seized Tift’s computer and devices and found hundreds of indecent images of children.

Tift was sentenced to 15 years at Warwick Crown Court on Monday, June 24 and has been issued an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Patryk Kantor drove 120 miles to meet the girl in a park close to her home and drove her to an Air BnB.

During his online conversations. he had pretended to be 17 years old but was in fact 25.

The alarm was raised by the girl’s mother, who became concerned about some comments that she made.

Kantor was arrested on March 28, 2024, two days after the initial call to police.

He was identified and arrested thanks to CCTV enquiries and automatic number-plate recognition checks on his vehicle.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child, causing and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and meeting a child after grooming.

On Friday, June 14, he was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court to five years imprisonment. He is also subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must sign as a Registered Sex Offender for life.

Coventry-based Alexander Hindmarsh resigned from West Midlands Police after making dozens of films of other men without their consent.

A police officer who covertly recorded men using public toilets and showers for his own sexual gratification has been jailed for 19 months.

Alexander Hindmarsh, who resigned from West Midlands Police after carrying out the horrible offences over a period of almost two years, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing.

The 32-year-old, of Dulverton Avenue, Coventry, was also ordered to register as a sex offender at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, after being told his claims in police interviews of consensual voyeurism were absurd lies.

Prosecutor Robert Tolhurst told the hearing that Hindmarsh, described as being on a fast-track route to the rank of inspector, was chased and detained by members of the public and shop security guards in Coventry on November 13 last year.

The court heard the constable, who was on annual leave, had been apprehended after a victim spotted him using his phone to film over the wall of a toilet cubicle at Coventrys Cannon Park Shopping Centre.

Mr Tolhurst told the court that Hindmarsh was taken to a custody block at Perry Barr in Birmingham, while officers searched his home.

The defendant tried to say it was all a mess and a mistake, Mr Tollhurst said.

Although no recording of the incident that led to his arrest was found, the response officers phone was examined and footage of 39 other examples of suspected voyeurism were discovered.

A total of 28 videos of men using toilet cubicles and showers, including some thought to be from service stations in Staffordshire and Worcestershire, were identified and Hindmarsh later admitted charges of observing and recording persons doing private acts between December 2020 and November 2022.

The court was told the videos showed some of the victims naked, while it was clear none of them had any idea they were being filmed.

Passing sentence, Judge Dean Kershaw criticised Hindmarshs claims that he mistook one of the victims for his partner and that consensual voyeurism was a thing in the gay community.

It's my belief that you did know better but you thought when you were committing these offences that you simply wouldn't get caught. That's why you continued to do it for so long

The judge told the former constable: These offences were done for your sexual gratification.

I have watched each and every one of the exhibits. It is absolutely obvious that these people are not consenting.

You are or were a police officer a police officer who no doubt would have gone on and eventually become an inspector.

For two years you were engaged in this kind of conduct your crime has consequences and you should have known better.

Its my belief that you did know better but you thought when you were committing these offences that you simply wouldnt get caught. Thats why you continued to do it for so long.

Attacking Hindmarshs account to police after his arrest, the judge added: You gave absurd statement littered with lie after lie.

The prosecution case was able to unpick his lies, leaving Hindmarsh with little choice but to admit his guilt

In a statement issued following the sentencing, the Crown Prosecution Service said the locations identified during the inquiry included service stations at Tamworth and Hopwood Park, near Bromsgrove.

Julia Powell, from the CPS, said: These men were oblivious to being filmed while they used public lavatories.

When initially arrested Hindmarsh told officers that he had believed it was his partner in the cubicle beside him on that occasion.

But during police interview Hindmarsh later said that the incident in which he had been caught out had simply been as a result of a misunderstanding having arranged to meet a man from the Grindr app for some fun.

The prosecution case was able to unpick his lies, leaving Hindmarsh with little choice but to admit his guilt.

A Coventry rapist has been jailed for 13 years after his teenage victim revealed a catalogue of offences described as sickening by the police. Carlos Cope, 24, had been in a relationship with the woman but his behaviour became controlling to the point where he was managing her finances and questioning who she was seeing.

Cope began using her money to buy drugs and checking her phone to see who shed been in contact with. The situation came to a head in June last year when Cope became violent towards the young woman and her sister.

He punched her and dragged her along the floor by her hair. Although police were called, she decided not to take the matter further.

However, the following month Cope, of Westminster Road, Spon End, launched his most brutal and disturbing attack. After checking her texts, he punched, her, bit her arms and smashed a lamp on her head repeatedly. In the wake of this the victim disclosed what had happened to West Midlands Polices specialist domestic abuse team.

Detective Constable Jonathan Barker, from West Midlands Polices Public Protection Unit, said: The details of the attack are too sickening to share. It is enough to say the young woman was defiled in the most humiliating way.

I applaud her bravery in bringing this prosecution and ensuring that other women are safe from Cope for some years to come.

Cope was found guilty of rape and assault after a week-long trial and sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on Friday (July 15) where he was also given a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim or her sister. He will also remain on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

In the wake of Copes sentencing, West Midlands Police has urged anyone who is a victim of domestic abuse or coercive control to come forward.

A force spokesman said: If you are a victim of coercive control or domestic abuse, we have specially trained officers who can help you. We work with a number of other agencies and charities who can support you.

A callous and calculating killer who murdered three people in six days is facing life behind bars after being convicted of raping his final victim. Anthony Russell murdered mother and son Julie and David Williams, 58 and 32, at their flats before raping and killing Nicole McGregor, 31, who was pregnant and had shown him a baby scan. Despite knowing she was dead, he told Nicoles boyfriend: I bet you cant wait for it to be born. The murders took place in Coventry in October 2020 and Nicoles body was found in Leamington Spa three days after her death. After Russell was found guilty, police released footage of the moment he was found sleeping in a stolen car which he had been using as a hideout. Russells murder spree began on October 21 when he strangled David with a lanyard. Four days later he murdered Julie in a violent and sustained attack, hitting her repeatedly around the head and neck. He inflicted over 113 injuries on her and is believed to have killed her because she knew he had murdered her son. The following day, Davids body was discovered with 87 injuries Russell would later go on to say hed killed a man who had had sex with his girlfriend. The deaths sparked one of the biggest ever manhunts in the West Midlands. Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards said: This was a violent series of killings which happened over a period of just seven days, but which have left two families devastated for the rest of their lives. We believe that David was killed due to Russells mistaken belief that he was in a relationship with his girlfriend. When Russell went to speak to Julie about her sons disappearance, we suspect that he confessed to Davids killing. He then killed Julie to stop her from speaking to the police. Theres no known link between Russell and Nicole, and it appears to be pure chance that he has encountered her. CCTV footage of Ms McGregor, who lived in a flat in Leamington, was played to the jury during the trial, showing her walking alongside Russell at 7.45pm on October 26. During her opening speech, prosecutor Zoe Johnson QC said of the footage: This is the last time Nicole is seen alive. Just three hours after meeting the defendant it appears that Nicole has agreed to walk with the defendant into Newbold Comyn. We suggest that the defendant lured Nicole on to the Comyn, not for sex but more likely for drugs. The defendant murdered Nicole McGregor shortly after that image was captured, just hours after they had met. After the murder, he pretended to help Ms McGregors partner look for her. The killer was eventually the subject of a national manhunt, and fled Leamington by robbing a 78-year-old man of his car. Russell rung the pensioners doorbell asking for directions, and when the victim was distracted he hit him over the head from behind with a brick, leaving him with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain. The killer was arrested on October 30 after police spotted the stolen Ford C-Max parked on a road near Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, and found Russell on the back seat. While being booked into custody, he told officers: I admit it, I did it. Russell, from Coventry, will be sentenced on Friday.

A Coventry man has been jailed after he sexually assaulted a woman last year.

Saad Sheikh, 30, of The Spinney, Coventry, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assaulting a stranger. The incident took place on the evening of August 1, 2020, near Jephson Gardens, in Leamington.

The victim, a woman in her 40s, was sitting on a bench when Sheikh sat down next to her and sexually assaulted her by touching her over and under her clothing.

Sheikh was identified on CCTV and was arrested five days later.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison at a hearing held at Warwick Crown Court yesterday (September 29). He was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which stops him from engaging in paid or unpaid work with vulnerable people.

Detective Constable Nic Mort, from Leamington CID, said: This was a terrible ordeal for the victim, who is an extremely vulnerable woman. The judge was clear that Sheikh would have been aware of her vulnerabilities and targeted her because of this.

The ordeal left her distraught and traumatised.

I would like to recognise the bravery of the victim who has conducted herself with bravery and dignity throughout the investigation.

As well as receiving a custodial sentence, Sheikh will also have to sign the sex offender register and be subject to sexual harm prevention order which means he will be closely monitored when he is released from prison.

Incidents of this nature inevitably have an impact on the local community, so I hope the police response and this outcome will reassure the people of Leamington that we will work tirelessly to bring offenders like Sheikh to justice.

A sexual "predator" who abused four schoolgirls has been given a substantial jail sentence.

Gareth Berry was convicted by a Leicester Crown Court jury, of 10 counts of sexual assaults upon the girls.

But only after the 39-year-old defendant had denied the offences and accused his victims of lying - leading to a trial.

Sentencing, Judge Robert Brown said: "What you did to these four young girls is been devastating for them.

"Over a period of five years, between 2011 and 2016, you took advantage of them.

"You used grooming behaviour.

"By having a trial you required all four of your victims to re-live the events.

"You denied the allegations and accused every one of them of making up those allegations and there's no hint of remorse as you stand before me now - I presume you are still in denial."

Andrew Howarth, prosecuting, all the victims were left traumatised by what happened to them in separate events in Leicester and Northampton.

The offences came to light In 2016 when two victims living in Northampton reported the abuse to police and an investigation began. As a result of inquires, two victims living in Leicester identified themselves to officers from the force's Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) and said they too had been sexually abused by Berry.

In victim impact statements read out by the prosecutor prior to sentencing, two complainants described suffering flashbacks, depression, anxiety, loss of trust and feeling isolated. One of them had self-harmed.

A third complainant went into the witness box to face her abuser and tell the court how her mental health had suffered.

She wept as she said: "I tried to take my life more than once, I felt it was my fault.

"I still have nightmares, flashbacks and thoughts to kill myself."

The fourth victim did not wish to make a personal impact statement, the court was told.

The judge told the victims' parents and two of the complainants, who attended the sentencing: "You are the victims and you've done nothing wrong at all, at any stage.

"He's a predator, he sought you out in moments of vulnerability - you're in no way to blame.

"It takes real courage to stand up and say what needs to be said and I admire you for it.

"You know that all 12 jurors believed you and every one of those guilty verdicts was unanimous."

He said he accepted that Berry, of Houldsworth Crescent, Coventry, had not previously been prosecuted of matters involving sex offending.

Helen Johnson, mitigating, said: "This is a case that has been delayed which has affected everybody involved and that includes Mr Berry, who was arrested at the beginning of 2017 and was under investigation for two years before being charged.

"He had four trial dates before actually getting a trial and the delay is a justification for a reduction in the sentence."

Judge Brown said the delay was also partly due to the pandemic.

Berry was jailed for 14 years with an additional one year licence period.

He was convicted of:

- Six counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13

- Three counts of sexual activity with a child

- One count of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration

He was placed on an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and will have to enlist on a sex offender register for life.

Afterwards, one of the investigating officers, Detective Raj Pahal, said: "All four victims were children when Berry began abusing them.

"He took advantage of them for his own sexual gratification in the belief that they wouldn't tell anyone about what he was doing.

"However, as they got older they realised what had happened and reported his crimes to police.

"I hope the fact that he has been convicted of his crimes – and is now serving a significant custodial sentence – will provide some reassurance and allow them to begin to move on with their lives."

A man who became obsessed with a 13-year-old girl 'threw his life away' to have sex with her, a court has heard.

David Beeseley knew the age of his victim from the outset when he started sharing sexually explicit messages and pictures with the girl on SnapChat.

He then picked her up from her school in Leicestershire one day in November 2019 and drove her to the car park at Groby Pool where they engaged in sexual activity. The next morning he turned up at her home after her parents had left for work and had sex with her.

The girl, who had been a virgin, believed Beesley was a 19-year-old graphic design student at Warwick University, but really he was more than twice her age as a 29-year-old Starbucks cashier at Corley Services on the M6 near Coventry. He also lied about his surname.

They had sex again on another occasion a few weeks later, and the girl told her mum she had sex with a man as she was worried she was pregnant. Her mum called the police.

At Leicester Crown Court on Friday, Beesley, now 30, of Proffit Avenue, Coventry, was jailed after admitting nine separate sexual offences against a child.

Judge Timothy Spencer told him: "I think you were overcome by some sort of madness. You had a decent job, a steady relationship and your partner was expecting your first baby.

"You had so much positive going on in your life it's really difficult to decide why you threw it all away.

"Right from the start you knew she was 13, but you decided to live out your sexual obsession with her."

The court heard that Beesley had first contacted the girl in September or October 2019, when he was 29 and she was 13.

Prosecutor Michael Cramner Brown said he met her after school on November 4.

He said: "He picked her up and took her to the car park at Groby Pool. She thought they were just going to meet to talk and maybe a kiss or two.

"She was in her school uniform and had some holes in her tights and he was touching the holes, and then they kissed and he pulled her onto his lap."

The following morning they had sex in her bed, and after that he "went off the radar", Mr Cramner Brown said.

A few days later she received a text message from Beesley's partner, who told the girl she was eight months pregnant with Beesley's child and asked the girl not to contact him again. Beesley later told the girl he did not have a partner and that the message was really from his sister, who was being overprotective.

Beesley convinced his partner, meanwhile, that he was not going to see the girl again, and denied knowing she was just 13.

Mr Cramner Brown said: "He managed to wriggle his way out of it with his girlfriend. The girl bought it all, too."

Beesley went back to see the girl on December 4, and they had sex again, including unprotected sex that led to the girl confiding in her mother.

As soon as Beesley found out the police were involved, he sold his phone. But because he was on a contract, phone records made it easy to find out who he was.
