A grandad was deemed too drunk to be sentenced after sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a train.

Raymond Beckett was so intoxicated that he fell over on the steps outside Liverpool Crown Court as he was due to learn his fate over the vile incident. He harassed the youngster as she made her way home from Liverpool city centre, touching her inappropriately before asking her: "Don't you like being touched?"

The same court heard yesterday that the 17-year-old victim had been waiting to board a train at Central Station with a friend at around 9pm when she noticed the convicted sex offender, who she said "made her feel uncomfortable" and "smelled very strongly of alcohol". Zahra Baqri, prosecuting, described how Beckett then walked behind the girls before approaching them.

The 64-year-old first spoke to the the teen's friend, who "began looking at her phone in an effort to discourage him from communicating with them". He reacted by asking the complainant: "What is wrong with her?"

Beckett, of Sharples Crescent in Crosby, went on to touch her right arm with his hand and added "be careful" while "looking directly at her breasts". She then zipped up her coat after being "made more uncomfortable" by his actions.

At this stage, a Merseyrail worker approached him and said: "So, are you back then?"

Security staff meanwhile "advised the young girls to go to the opposite end of the platform" and enter via a carriage towards the front of the train. But the defendant boarded the service and made his way into the same carriage and sat down next to them.

Beckett then touched her to the shoulder and rubbed her thigh. He went on to grab her hand "tightly" and kiss it, only letting go when she began to have a panic attack.

But her friend told her that her dad would be picking them up from Sandhills Station in a "rouse intended to get the defendant to move away from them". Beckett continued to touch the girl's shoulder however, and she told him: "Don't touch me, I don't like people touching me."

He replied "don't you like being touched?" before his "mood changed" and he began repeating: "I don't want to speak to you. F*** off."

Beckett also called the victim's friend a "p***k" and "tried to block them from the doors" when they got up to leave the train. As they got off, he took the other girl's water bottle and "threw it all over her hands".

He was subsequently identified via CCTV footage and in an identity parade. Under interview, Beckett "denied presence" and said he "didn't use the train that day", but "could not remember what he was doing".

The pervert added that he had spent six weeks in hospital shortly before the incident after suffering a brain injury which affected his memory. He conceded having had an "alcohol dependency", but said it "does not change his behaviour and merely makes him fall over".

Beckett's criminal record shows six previous convictions for six offences. This includes an entry for indecent assault of a female under 14 in 1996.

In a statement which was read out to the court on her behalf, the complainant said: "I had to throw away the clothes I wore that day. The thought of wearing them gave me shivers and reminded me of what happened.

"I get nightmares where I imagine him touching my thigh again. In these dreams, I can't escape and I wake up crying.

"When I go to Liverpool Central, I get a sinking feeling in my stomach when the train pulls up at the station. I feel constantly on edge and look around constantly."

Beckett was due to appear before the court for sentencing on Friday last week. However, he was seen lying down on the steps outside the court on Derby Square beforehand having apparently fallen over on his way into the building.

The defendant, wearing a black suit over a white shirt and black tie, then continued to stumble around as he was helped inside by a relative and security staff. The hearing could not ultimately proceed "due to the level of the defendant's intoxication", and Beckett was remanded into custody over the weekend.

Peter White, defending, told the court on Monday: "It appears that alcohol is the root of the problem here. Mr Beckett accepts that he has been a functioning alcoholic for a number of years.

"He has a bottle of brandy most days, on top of other alcohol. It would appear that, when he is not at that level of intoxication, he is able to avoid causing trouble.

"This gentleman describes his daily life as coming into the city centre, having a drink, watching the buskers and going home. Mr Beckett has had one other custodial sentence.

"It was almost 30 years ago. I think he has had one court appearance since for non-payment of a railway fare.

"He has been an alcoholic for a number of years, and he recognises that. The first 48 hours he has had sober in a long time has been this weekend."

Beckett admitted two counts of sexual assault. Wearing a grey prison issue tracksuit in the dock, he was jailed for nine months.

Sentencing, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC said: "You plainly were significant affected by drink as you were most days, as you were addicted to alcohol. You approached her and her friend and began to pester them.

"In your drunken mind, this all seemed perfectly innocent - but she must have been terrified. She must have feared that she going to be the victim of a much more serious incident.

"You have a limited record of recently previous convictions. Your life is chaotic because of your problems and challenges with drink."

Beckett was also handed a five-year sexual harm prevention order. He will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for 10 years.

A sex offender called a "danger to women" kidnapped his former partner at knifepoint and threatened to "shiv" her and her brother if she tried to escape.

Connor Owen, 30, entered into a relationship with Toni Roberts in April last year and in the early weeks everything seemed prosperous. However, Owen, who has significant mental health issues including schizophrenia, stopped taking his medication in late May despite both the Probation Service and his then partner urging him to continue his dosage.

Liverpool Crown Court heard today, Monday, April 15 that Ms Roberts, who has two children - aged seven and nine - from a previous relationship, decided the pair did not have a future together. However, Arthur Gibson, prosecuting, told the court Owen - a registered sex offender who previously had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl - was not prepared to accept it.

The court heard in early October 2023 he invited her around to his grandparents' home where he lived and grabbed her by the neck and forced a sobbing Ms Roberts into the garden by knifepoint. Ms Roberts only managed to escape the house and back to her own home via taxi when Owen's nan realised something was up.

Owen continued to bombard Ms Roberts with texts and calls which she continued to respond to in a hope of keeping the peace. However, matters came to a head on October 25 last year when Ms Roberts went to the cinema with her two children. She was dropped off at the cinema and then picked up and taken home by her brother Anthony Dennis.

Mr Gibson told the court that the two were outside the front of her house chatting and having a vape when a taxi pulled up. Ms Roberts recalled her brother saying "get back in the taxi lad" before the defendant emerged. She ran back into the house and locked the door while Mr Dennis spoke to the "irate" Owen.

Mr Dennis decided the best way to cool off the defendant was for his sister to speak to him to which she agreed. However, Mr Gibson said "this turned out to be a terrible mistake", with the defendant pulling out a knife, holding it to her back and forcing her to walk down the road away from her house.

Owen told the terrified mum-of-two to "shut up or I will shiv you". He added "by the time the police get here you will be dead". Mr Dennis called the police and followed after the pair in his car. After pulling up alongside the defendant and his sister, Ms Roberts managed to dive into the back seat of the car.

The defendant then ran around towards the open driver's window with the knife, but Mr Dennis managed to pull away, knocking Owen to the ground with his wing mirror. The brother and sister fled back to her house where they locked the door. The defendant ran back to the house and started kicking the front door. Perplexed neighbours came out to see the commotion, including one man who attempted to stop Owen from kicking the door.

He was forced to back off after Owen said "f*** off or stab you". Ms Roberts, Mr Dennis and her terrified children hunkered down inside the house until Owen fled the scene. He was arrested at his grandparents' address at around 9.15pm and told the police he would cooperate.

The knife was recovered and Owen was taken to Belle Vale custody suite where he answered no comment to police questions. Due to his previous sexual offences convictions - where he received a sentence of nine years plus four on extended licence - Owen was returned to prison. However, Mr Gibson said he continued to terrorise his former partner by sending her a letter on November 17 last year while he was behind bars.

In a victim impact statement read to the court by Mr Gibson, Ms Roberts said: "My life and my kids' lives could have been taken away in a blink of an eye...my life will never be the same." She added: "I have been looking over my shoulder in case he has come back to get us.

"I am scared of every Delta taxi that I see. I have had nightmares since, I can't sleep properly, relax or eat a meal. My family could have been three members down. My children say 'is the bad man coming back?' I am scared of the future and know he is capable of the worst."

The court heard Owen has a history of violence, including previous convictions for section 47 assault and assaulting a police officer. He also received a custodial sentence in February 2012 for possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply. However, he received a significant prison sentence on February 2014 for sexual assault and rape of a teenager. He received a further consecutive sentence while in prison in April 2017 for possession of a mobile phone.

Appearing before the court on November 24 last year, Owen entered guilty pleas to threatening with a weapon in a private place; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; kidnap; and two counts of threatening with an article with blade/point in a public place. In mitigation, Sarah Holt, defending, said: "Nothing I am about to say is intended to justify or diminish his acts.

"He apologises to Ms Roberts, regrets his behaviour and fully recognises how frightening this would have been for her." She added there was minimal physical harm, but accepted the "considerable" emotional and psychological harm that the victim would have experienced.

She added it was her submission that the kidnapping was at the lower end of the kidnapping cases that could be heard at crown court. Ms Holt told the court her client had a "damaged childhood which has impacted his adult life" and his best mitigation was his guilty pleas at the earliest opportunity.

In his sentencing remarks, His Honour Judge David Aubrey KC said in his view the offending must be viewed against a background of an abusive relationship after Ms Roberts made the decision to leave for the welfare of herself and her children. He told Owen that the "perceived rejection simmered in your mind and you were unable to accept the relationship was over".

He arrived at her house due to "jealousy and possessiveness", said Judge Aubrey, and Mr Dennis' attempts to calm the defendant by asking his sister to speak with him was like "a red rag to a bull". He said Ms Roberts' victim impact statement showed she and her children were "traumatised, shaking and crying" by the experience. He added the statement speaks of her "anxiety, stress and alarm" about living in constant fear.

Judge Aubrey told Owen that he recognised he suffered from anxiety, unstable personality disorder and schizophrenia and accepted a doctor's recommendation that he was "labouring under the symptoms of his illnesses". He said if Owen had continued to take his medication "it may be a small part of your culpability would have been reduced". However, he added Owen was "determined not to take his medication", despite medical advice and pleas from Ms Roberts.

The judge said: "You are a possessive and jealous man. In 2014 you were found to be dangerous to women, You remain to be dangerous to women and are a significant risk to members of the public." Owen, of Ermine Crescent, Everton, was sentenced to six years, eight months and an extended licence of four years, four months.

Owen, who wore a grey Berghaus top and sported black hair and beard, also received an indefinite restraining order not to contact Ms Roberts in any way.

A FORMER Andover athletics coach who manipulated, abused and violated schoolgirls, one as young as 11 years old, has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

Philip Banning, 68, pursued a horrific reign of abuse in Andover during the 1970s and 1980s.

Today he mouthed "sorry" to his victims after pleading guilty to 18 counts of indecent assault relating to four girls who were under the age of 16 at the time of the offences.

Prosecutor Tim Moores told Winchester Crown Court that Banning, who now lives in Penhow, Wales, had been an Olympic hopeful in his younger years.

He ran at an international level for Team GB before returning to Andover Athletics Club as a qualified coach where he met the four girls.

It is in this context that he came into contact with the four complainants, and in due course began to sexually abuse them to a greater or lesser degree, Mr Moores said.

Under the guise of acting as coach and mentor, he was pursuing a regime of abuse against certain members of the club.

The court heard that Banning would assault the girls during car rides home after training, as well as during sports massages.

One of the girls was aged just 11 years-old when she was assaulted in Bannings car, before he asked her, is this something youve done before?

Two of the girls were assaulted in a room under Bannings stairs at his home address, during a party where the children were allowed to drink alcohol, the court heard.

One of the girls bumped into Banning in Andover town centre, before he led her to a school field and abused her.

Three of the survivors in this case, now adult women, defiantly hit back at their abuser when reading their victim personal statements to the court.

You were my coach, and you were my teacher, and you held a position of trust, one of the women told the defendant as he sat in the dock.

You were meant to nurture a childs development, you were trained to safeguard children, but instead you chose to slowly manipulate, violate and sexually abuse me. I was left abused, violated and confused, still too young to understand the significance of this. I did not have the understanding of how sinister and insidious your motives were.

You took my childhood, my trust, my voice, my worth, and nearly my life.

The woman told the court that Banning had also given her a Valentines card when she was just 12 years old.

She continued: You said to me that this was your way of showing me your special love. But this was like a septic wound that was never allowed to heal. Even if it did scab over briefly, it was picked open by my own self-hatred.

Another survivor told the court that her first kiss as a child which was brutal and forceful was with Banning, which left her feeling shattered.

Banning mouthed sorry to the women in court as he was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for the offences. He must also sign on the sex offenders register for life.

Sentencing Banning, Judge Keith Cutler CBE said: You are responsible for what everyone agrees was a grave abuse of trust.

What you were doing was grooming [the girls], abusing your position, and seeking them as your sexual relief, not caring really how that was to affect them, as clearly you can see it has.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Toby Elcock, said of the case: After initially denying the offences, Banning has now taken responsibility for his horrific reign of abuse, which has spared the victims having to go through a difficult trial process.

For these girls, this should have been an important time in their young lives. They were schoolchildren exploring their passion for sport, and this was ruined by Bannings appalling sexual appetite.

I hope they can now rest assured that justice has been served and Banning will not be able to harm another child.

Mark Birtles picked up his victim, who was then aged under 18, one evening in April last year and drove to a remote area before raping her.

The 20-year-old, of Laburnum Road, Mexborough, was arrested that month after the girl went to hospital and reported what had happened.

Birtles was found guilty of rape following a three-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court, which ended on Friday, and was jailed for six years.

He was given an additional one year prison sentence for breaching a suspended sentence for harassment, though this will run concurrently with the other sentence.

Detective Constable Cheryl McCorkell, who led the investigation, said: "Birtles had offered the victim a lift one evening last April before he stopped in a remote area near Bolton-upon-Dearne and raped her.

"She has shown immense courage in coming forward and reporting what happened and was forced to endure the trial after Birtles continued to deny his guilt, despite the substantial evidence gathered against him.

"I'd like to thank and praise the girl for showing such strength and bravery as she gave evidence during the trial. The conviction is a testament to that and I hope that knowing Birtles is behind bars for the next six years goes some way in helping her to move forward with her life."

A paedophile jailed for trying to contact children online says he did it as a form of escapism from his boring job. Alastair Walsh, 49, has been locked up for 18 months after being caught in a police sting.

He was convicted of attempted sexual communication with three online profiles set up by undercover cops. He quickly turned the chat sexual and discussed the possibility of meeting up.

He did not know the profiles were decoys and the children did not exist. Police arrested him at his home in Ilfracombe and seized devices. They found evidence he also liked to chat with other paedophiles about his fantasies online.

Walsh admitted three offences of attempted sexual communication with a child and one of distributing an indecent image.

Prosecutor Paul Grumbar said the three communication offences each followed a similar pattern with Walsh using Kik and thinking he was messaging girls. In one message to a decoy 13-year-old he said he said was a 19-year-old call Al.

He sent photos of a male torso and told the 'child' he wanted to put his hands down her skirt. He also sent a pornographic image via WhatsApp.

Police arrested him in June 2022 and seized his devices. Analysis showed a number of messages, including one where he shared a category B image of a real girl aged 10-12, and others involving long discussions with other paedophiles.

He told police the activity was an escape because he was going through a difficult time and denied any intention to meet the children.

Walsh is now ashamed of his actions and would welcome rehabilitative work. He was drinking a bottle of wine and cider every day at the time and "wasn't enjoying his job," working as a manager for an unnamed firm, said Zoe Kuyken, defending. He now has a new job as a coach driver and is much happier.

Judge David Evans said: "It seems you have a clear interest in underage girls. You engaged with three profiles for young girls aged 12-13 online. You turned things sexual quite rapidly each time.

"You send them partial photos of naked bodies and solicited images from them. You discussed underage girls with other like-minded adults. You clearly pose some risk of reoffending and clearly have an interest in underage girls."

A Plymouth man has been jailed for internet-based child sex offences and the sexual assault of a young girl.

Stephen Humphries, 58, from Pendeen Close in Plymouth, was sentenced to an eight year custodial term with a further two years to be served on extended licence at Plymouth Crown Court on Thursday 21 March.

He had pleading guilty to attempting to arrange/facilitate the commission of a child sex offence, making indecent photographs of children, distributing indecent photographs of children, taking indecent photographs, sexual assault of a child and possession of extreme pornography. He was also made subject of a sexual harm prevention order.

The court heard how Humphries had been engaging with someone online since 4 October 2023, who he believed would enable him to commit an online child sexual offence. However, what Humphries didnt know was that individual was actually an investigating officer.

Humphries home was raided at 12.10pm on Saturday 14 October and inside the defendant was found with evidence open on his phone suggesting he was preparing to commit the act.

A large number of devices were seized from inside the property and later found to contain thousands of indecent images and videos of children spanning all three categories. There was also evidence that Humphries had shared some of the indecent images with others.

Humphries was also sentenced for sexual assaulting a girl aged under 16 in Plymouth.

Following the sentencing, officer in the case DC Sophie House said: This was a complex police investigation which incorporated work from both the Devon and Cornwall Police Paedophile Online Investigation Team and the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU).

We welcome todays sentence and hope this conviction serves as a stark warning to those with an unlawfully blurred view of consent and the wider implications of the sexual abuse of children. This was a collaborative effort involving officers from the NEROCU, Devon and Cornwall Paedophile Online Investigation Team, the Force Support Group, and the Data Forensic Unit.

I would also like to thank the victim in this case for her bravery and courage in coming forward. Its not an easy thing to disclose something very personal to you, particularly when it relates to sexual offences. I hope this investigation highlights that the police take sexual allegations seriously, you will be believed, and we will support you as much as we can.

A sex offender was warned he is a "marked man" after breaching a court order aimed at controlling his deviant behaviour on Valentine's Day.

Paul Carmon was made subject to a community order for an attempted child sex offence in 2018. As a result of that he was made subject to sex offender registration with one of the requirements being he was not to use pseudonyms.

But on February 14 this year, he used the names Paul Nook and Paul Smith while talking online to what appeared to be a 12-year-old girl but was actually a decoy profile being run by a law enforcement officer. The conversation took place on Chat Avenue and Snapchat.

Carmon, 43, of Wynyard Drive, Bedlington, Northumberland, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with notification requirements by using the aliases but there was no suggestion he had communicated sexually with the profile. Recorder Tony Hawks, at Newcastle Crown Court, said: "He is doing his best to get locked up."

The judge sentenced him to six months suspended for two years with rehabilitation and he must sign the sex offenders register for seven years. Recorder Hawks told him: "You have a serious problem. Unless you address it, it's going to end up with you going to prison, do you understand?

"I've read a report about you that says you did well on your community order but the fundamental purpose of that order was to stop you trying to communicate with underage girls. You have done it again.

"You are a marked man Mr Carmon, do you understand that? You are not going to get away with doing it so you are going to have to sit down with the professionals and work out some strategy to stop doing this, unless you want to go to prison.

"I'm not going to tell you how to live your life but the next time this happens it's bound to be immediate custody."

Vic Laffey, defending, said: "He is an intelligent man and has acted a bit recklessly."

A fish restaurant manager sent a series of "disgusting and repugnant" pictures and videos to a fake 12-year-old girl after they exchanged intimate and explicit messages on social media platforms Kick and Snapchat.

Mark Collinson used the false name "Fandango" and he jokingly admitted to the decoy girl that he was a "bad man" for talking to her and that he "could get in loads of trouble" for it. He asked her to keep quiet about their X-rated conversations because it was "our secret" and he later sent her a message with a Valentine's Day heart on it, Hull Crown Court heard.

Collinson, 41, of North Cave, admitted attempting to cause a child to watch sexual activity during communication between January 25 and February 22, 2022.

Annabelle Coakley, prosecuting, said that Collinson used the false name "Fandango" and he sent a message on the Kick social media site to an undercover decoy, who was posing as a 12-year-old girl. She accepted Collinson's invitation to chat and he also added her on Snapchat.

They began communicating and Collinson sent a number of explicit images of himself, including committing a sex act. "The communication from the defendant was sexual in nature," said Miss Coakley.

The fake girl told Collinson that she was aged 12 and he laughingly replied: "12?!!" before making references to watching pornography and asked her explicit questions. On a couple of occasions, he asked the girl if she was still in school.

He sent a revealing video of himself and asked her if he should "lose" the boxer shorts that he was wearing. He sent a video of himself committing a sex act. "You need a spanking," he said.

Collinson sent intimate images of himself and he told the decoy girl that she was as "cute as f***". He told her: "I'm a bad man for talking to you lol. Could get in loads of trouble. It's our secret."

Collinson sent a further explicit video of himself, filmed while he was watching pornography. He later sent further images of himself and explicit messages. He asked her a picture and asked her what underwear she had on.

On February 14, 2022, Collinson sent her an image of a heart and the message "Happy Valentine's Day". The conversations continued until February 22, 2022. He was arrested on May 7 of that year at his home.

He claimed during police interview that he believed that the decoy was an adult and that he had done nothing wrong. He had no previous convictions.

Ben Hammersley, mitigating, said that Collinson had shown regret and shame and he had difficulty expressing what had happened. He pleaded guilty, acted out of character and struggled to accept what he had done.

"There has been no police involvement in the two-and-a-half years since then," said Mr Hammersley. "He is quite rightly disgusted by his behaviour.

"There is no other word for it. It's disgusting and repugnant." Collinson had worked all his life and he was a restaurant manager in Hull.

Recorder Paul Reid told Collinson: "For some time, you have an unnatural and unlawful sexual interest in children. Kick is well known to be used by children as a social media platform.

"The decoy was posing as a 12-year-old. You invited her to chat and you did so over a period of about a month. This was both on Kick and Snapchat. You went on in the conversation to talk about pornography and sex."

Collinson was given a 14-month suspended prison sentence, 100 hours' unpaid work and 30 days' rehabilitation. He was given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and he must register as a sex offender for 10 years. He was ordered to pay £425 costs.

A man has been sentenced to almost four years in jail after CAIT detectives were able to link him to the sexual assault of a young girl in Harlow.

Officers were alerted to an incident on Wednesday 15 June 2022 at Oakwood Pond.

During the incident, a teenage girl was approached by a man shortly before 4.20pm and sexually assaulted her.

Thankfully, she was able to get away and seek help.

We then launched an investigation into the incident and used the description given to us by the victim in order to locate Luis Palma.

His distinctive clothing, a blue t-shirt, blue denim shorts and Vans-style trainers, allowed us to identify him using CCTV. His description and images of him were then circulated amongst officers who were patrolling across Harlow.

On Friday 17 June, officers passed a man who was holding a Nike bag which appeared to be similar to one being carried by the man in the CCTV footage. He was then followed and paused to look back at officers before walking into two waiting officers ahead of him.

He was then arrested and during a search of his home, each of the distinctive items of clothing were all found.

As the investigation progressed, officers also uncovered sexually explicit messages on Instagram between Palma and a 14-year-old girl. Throughout the messages, the girl had made it clear that she was aged 14 but Palma pursued the conversation.

Palma, 31, of Fold Croft, Harlow, was subsequently charged with sexual assault and sexually communicating with a 14-year-old girl between April 2022 and June 2022.

Palma appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court in February and admitted both charges.

He was sentenced at the same court on Wednesday 10 April to 44 months in jail. He will remain on the sex offender’s register for life and will be deported at the end of his sentence.

Officers were also successful in applying for a sexual harm prevention order and he has been banned from entering Harlow indefinitely.

A nan now goes to bed every night with a pair of scissors under her pillow after she was raped at knifepoint by a man she met at a bus stop.

Alex Belay appeared to be a "nice lad", and the nan agreed to go back to his flat in the belief that she had missed the last bus home. But he instead snatched her phone from her as she spoke to her son, held a knife to her stomach and throat and subjected her to a horrific sexual assault.

She was left "genuinely believing" she was going to die during the attack. A remorseless Belay then "smirked" after finally bringing the ordeal to an end.

Liverpool Crown Court heard this week the victim had been visiting a friend before leaving to get the bus home at around midnight. She encountered the defendant at the bus stop but, believing they had missed the last service of the evening, they then began walking away together while chatting, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Olivia Beesley, prosecuting, described how Belay then invited the woman into his flat on Sefton Moss Villas in Litherland. She agreed as she "thought she would be safe and wasn't in danger because he was much younger than her".

But, having returned from the toilet, she "felt that something was wrong" and told him that she was going to leave. Belay, an asylum seeker who was born in Eritrea and came to the UK in 2020 after fleeing civil war in Sudan, responded by turning the lights out and pushing her.

When she answered an incoming call from her son, the 26-year-old took her phone from her and locked the front door. He then grabbed a knife and held it to her stomach and pointed it at her throat "every time she began to speak".

Ms Beesley said: "She thought she wasn't going to get out of there alive."

Belay then pushed the woman onto his bed, pulled her trousers down and raped her. When the assault finished, she asked "can I go?" before escaping and phoning a family member.

A trial previously heard that she was able to describe her attacker's clothing and flat "in great detail", while she was found to have left her cigarette lighter in his bathroom. Belay's DNA was also discovered in her underwear, but he denied having even met her.

In a statement which was read out to the court on her behalf during his sentencing on Thursday, she detailed how she had "tried to kill herself numerous times" since and added: "Before this happened, my life wasn't perfect but I was a jolly person. I was happy and always had a smile on my face.

"I felt like I had everything to live for. I would do anything for anyone. Since the day this happened to me, I have been so angry and depressed. I just feel numb.

"I feel so dirty and I have no self respect. I am so angry for being so stupid. I never thought for one second that my life would be ruined by this. This has consumed me.

"It's all I think about. The day this happened to me, my world ended. When I go to bed, I keep a pair of scissors under my pillow. I don't feel safe any more, not even in my own home.

"I didn't do anything wrong. I'm paying for what he did to me. I just don't understand how he could do this. I go over what happened to me every day.

"What has happened to me has scarred me for life. I sometimes think, why didn't he kill me? I just thank god for letting me live so I can see my kids again. I will never be the same again.

"I am scared of my own shadow all the time. I just can't carry on this way. I just want to forget everything and get on with life, but I just can't. It's always there, every minute of the day."

Stella Hayden, defending, told the court: "This is plainly a particularly grave example of an offence even this serious in nature. It is very difficult to realistically advance that this is not a case where there has been severe psychological harm.

"It seems to have been a chance encounter when at the bus stop late at night. It is his first conviction. He is still a relatively young man. I understand that, given his status, he is likely to be deported in any event."

Belay was found guilty of rape by a jury. He was jailed for 12 years, a term of which he must serve at least two thirds before becoming eligible for release.

Sentencing, Judge Katherine Pierpoint said: "She saw no danger in you. She described you as being what she thought was a nice lad.

"She was a chatty person and you invited her back to your flat. Once she got into the flat, she got the feeling that something wasn't right. She said she wanted to leave, but you wouldn't let her. You turned the light off and locked the door, and you took her phone off her.

"At the time, she was speaking to her son. It is clear from the evidence that he was left distraught, having heard something of his mother's panic and the phone then being turned off.

"She pleaded with you to let her go. You picked up a large knife and put it to her stomach and then, when she tried to speak, put it to her throat. You dragged her to the bedroom, taking the knife with you. You pulled her lower clothes off and forced her onto the floor, where you then raped her."

"She was petrified. She genuinely believed you were going to kill her. It was her account that, as you got off her having raped her, you smirked. She left that flat traumatised.

"The evidence against you in this case was, in my judgement, overwhelming. You denied that you had ever met her, ever had any contact with her or that she had ever been in your flat. You have shown no remorse and continue to deny that you ever even met her. Your attack on her has had a devastating effect.

"She is still suffering greatly. Her mental health has been seriously damaged. She has made numerous attempts to take her own life. She is left feeling angry with herself for trusting you.

"You have, in her words, wrecked her life. She feels that she will never get over what you did to her. I accept that your time growing up in a war torn country would have been extremely traumatic for you. I take into account your age and that you have no previous convictions."

Judge Pierpoint also said of the victim: "I want to say that she is a strong woman who should be commended for her bravery in standing up against you."

Belay began remonstrating in his native tongue with his interpreter in the dock before he was led down to the cells by dock officers, who told him "go, go on". He will be required to sign the sex offenders register for life.

A convicted terrorist who made a chemical weapon has appeared back in court for failing to comply with a notification order, drugs offences and possessing "disturbing" child abuse images.

Ian Davison - who also goes by Ian Deleney - was caged for 44 months after pleading guilty to the following offences in 2023:

• Five counts of failing to comply with requirements under his 10-year Part 4 Notification order, contrary to the Counter Terrorism Act 2008
• Produce a Class B drug (Cannabis), contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971
• Possess with intent to supply a Class B drug (Cannabis), contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971

As part of a separate investigation led by Cleveland Police, the 55-year-old was also convicted of three counts of indecent images of children, contrary to the Protection of Children Act 1978, and one count of possession of prohibited images of a child, contrary to the Coroners and Justice Act 2009. The Longhirst, Middlesbrough defendant is now a registered sex offender and will be subject to a 10-Year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

In May 2010, Davison was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for producing a chemical weapon, preparing acts of terrorism, three counts of possessing material useful to commit acts of terror and one count of possessing a prohibited weapon. When arrested in 2009, searches at his home address found he had manufactured Ricin, which was found in a jar in his kitchen.

Detective Constable Dave Medd from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT) at Cleveland Police said: “This was one of the worst cases I have dealt with due to the disturbing nature of the images. The victims in these images suffer horrendous ordeals, and as a force we’re committed to doing everything possible to bring those who access such images to justice.”

Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley said: “Those subject to notification orders are strictly monitored, and breaches of any kind are taken extremely seriously and will be prosecuted. A Salford man has been jailed after an investigation into non-recent child sexual abuse.

Andrew Austin (03/11/1967), of Sumner Road, Irlam o’th Heights , has yesterday (Monday 29 July 2019) been sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to 26 years in prison. He previously pleaded guilty to-

• Four counts of rape
• Six counts of indecent assault
• Two counts of indecency with a child
• One count of sexual assault

He will also have to sign the sex offenders register for life.

Between 1998 and 2004, at a number of properties in Salford, Austin sexually abused four victims who were aged between eight and 16 at the time.

In August 2018, relatives of one of the victims – along with a charity worker – came forward to police and a full investigation was launched with Austin arrested.

During police interview Austin denied all offences but admitted his crimes before the case went to trial.

A CARER has been locked up for 12 years after sexually abusing a vulnerable man he was caring for.

Vile Mohammed Bari carried out a sustained campaign of abuse while he was working as a carer for his victim in south Essex.

The 22-year-old secured the job in 2016 to care for a 65-year-old man who was suffering from depression and dementia.

On at least two occasions Bari forced the vulnerable man to perform degrading sex acts on him.

Bari, of Lewes Road, Southend, consistently abused the man in his own home.

His victim eventually told another carer about what was happening in July 2017, and Bari was suspended, and later charged with sexual activity with a person suffering from a mental disorder.

Following a trial at Basildon Crown Court earlier this year, a jury convicted Bari by majority verdict of two counts, and acquitted him of one other.

His victim has since died.

Bari appeared by video link at Chelmsford Crown court today where he was lambasted by Judge Samantha Cohen.

She said: You stayed overnight in his home. You had authority over him as a parent would over a child.

Your employment placed you in a position of trust. You abused that trust in the most grotesque fashion.

You said what you were doing would help him relax.

You made him promise not to tell anyone about it. Fortunately, he did tell someone, another carer.

He made a tape recording of him explaining what it was you had done. His stress and fear are manifested in that recording.

Having heard it and seen his victim statement I am satisfied you sexually assaulted him on many occasions. The jury convicted you on two occasions, but I am satisfied it was many more than that.

Your victim was relieved that you were not going to come back. He died in May 2019. You were not responsible for his death, but you were responsible for the despair and fear which occurred in the immediate aftermath of your offending.

Your offending is hard to comprehend. You did not, and do not suffer from any mental illness.

Judge Cohen said that Bari had denied performing sex acts on himself while his victim was in the same room during the trial, but has now admitted to that.

Despite the conviction, the court heard that Bari does not accept the verdicts of the jury.

Judge Cohen added: It is very hard to say that you are remorseful when you keep changing your story. You have refused to accept what you have done despite the overwhelming evidence.

It makes it quite impossible to understand why you did this. Perhaps you were sexually attracted to him, or attracted to having total power over him in such invasive fashion. They are repeated offences that took place over many months.

Bari was given 12 years detention and will serve at least two years on licence following his release.

Benjamin Middlemiss, 25, of Oxcroft, Kirkbymoorside, was released on prison licence in July last year, halfway through his sentence for indecent assault, York Crown Court heard.

As part of his licence conditions, Middlemiss was given an exemption under his bail curfew to work at a Tesco store in York, but the authorities suspected he had not been going to work and not been residing at his bail address in keeping with the provisos.

In fact, this was an “administrational error” and Middlemiss had been working at the supermarket, but when police tried to contact him to inform him that he was wanted for prison recall, he didn’t reply, said prosecutor Rob Galley.

An officer went looking for Middlemiss and stopped him in his Ford Ka in York on December 15, when it was discovered that he only had a provisional driving licence.

The officer told him he was wanted for prison recall and took him by the arm, but as he was being led to the cells in York, Middlemiss shoved her backwards and she let go of him.

He ran off and despite an exhaustive search, police couldn’t find him. The fugitive vanished for a week but finally returned to his bail hostel on December 22, where he was arrested.

Middlemiss admitted escaping from lawful custody and driving with only a provisional licence. He was recalled to Hull Prison to serve the remainder of his original sentence and appeared via video link for sentence on the new offences on Monday.

The court heard he had previous convictions for arson, theft from vehicles, criminal damage and making off without payment. He received the nine-year sentence for sexual offences in December 2013.

Defence barrister Alex Menary said Middlesmiss’s current sentence would expire in four years’ time, but there were moves to release him “sooner rather than later” because of the progress he had been making in prison.

He said Middlemiss had “shrugged off” the officer following his arrest for the driving matter and prison recall, after “panicking because he thought he had done nothing wrong and had been to work”.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said that following Middlemiss’s release on licence last summer, it appeared that he was getting his life back on track and “doing everything expected of you”.

But escaping from custody and evading capture “for about seven days” was so serious that it could only be met with another prison sentence.

Middlemiss was handed a new four-month jail term. His existing sentence for the sex offences is due to expire in January 2023, but it’s likely he could be released before then.
